There are many well-exposed remnants of this latest volcanic activity in several counties throughout Montana; however, there is no reason to believe these become active again anytime soon.
The Bitterroots are Montana's longest mountain range and include three groups of mountains: the Bitterroots, the Beaverheads, and the Centennials.

Historians speculate that Highwood draws its name from tall trees that have grown high on top of the volcanic Highwood Mountains surrounding the community.
However the community received its name, it is known that Highwood was an important cattle-grazing area in the 1880s, and several cowboys migrated to the area to tend to their herds.
While the postal service was discontinued three times in the following years, Highwood reestablished a more stable post office in 1886 that has continuously operated to this day.

The Warner Johnson letters were donated by his grandson Robert K. Johnson, of Bozeman, Montana, to the Museum of the Rockies and transferred to Special Collections in August 1984.
It is probable that Warner and Nettie began writing because they had mutual friends in Dent County and had met before he left for Montana around the age of 16 or shortly thereafter when Warner was back for a visit.
Warner's letters were written from both Highwood and Belt, where he apparently worked as a hired hand at times and had some cattle, perhaps kept on his brother Braxton's homestead at Highwood.
