Champion chess player Hikaru Nakamura won the U.S. Championships last year at age 17, the youngest player to win the title since Bobby Fischer, who won it at age 14 in 1957.
Nakamura entered this year’s contest as the top seed in Group A. After losing two and playing to a draw in another, Nakamura won four games in a row to place fourth in Group A. He also took home the Bent Larsen Fighting Chess prize of $5,000 for showing the most spirited play.
Nakamura was born in Japan, but moved to Ridgecrest when he was very young.
