Hikone lies on the Nakasendo, which was one of the most important trading routes until modern times.
In 2003, meetings were held to discuss the merger of Hikone city with Toyosato (豊郷町), Kora (甲良町), and Taga (多賀町) towns.

Since I had the day off I decided to go to Hikone Castle in Hikone City, which is in Shiga prefecture, which is the prefecture to the east of Kyoto prefecture.
Hikone Castle is a "National Treasure" of Japan, and joins Inuyama, Himeji, and Matsumoto Castles as being the four oldest, original castles in Japan.
Hikone Castle is not as big as Inuyama Castle and there is no verdana at the top that you can walk around.

Completed in 1622 by the Ii family, who ruled over Hikone, this castle is considered to be one of the finest remaining castles in Japan.
Boasting some of the most spectucular local scenery a castle can offer (having more than 1000 cherry trees surrounding it and possessing a fabulous view of Lake Biwa-ko), the castle is only a few hours away from my hometown of Wakayama.
As with most Japanese castles, parts of it have fallen to ruin or were destroyed during the Meiji Restoration, but most of the castle as it stands today is in it's original condition.

These are my many, many, many pictures of Hikone castle.
This page takes you through the first gate, up the dangerous stairs that were kind of freaky to climb (though not nearly as frightening as the stairs we later climbed inside the castle), under the bridge that leads through another gate and up some more stairs, and a rather nice vista from the bridge.
For reference, the dark haired girl is Dani-chan (Danielle), the tall blonde with sunglasses is Kiri-chan (Maren, not Marron as it turns out), and the girl with short curly brown hair is Jen.

I could imagine myself living in the castle with my bedroom on the third (top) floor, surrounded by mountains and a view of the water in the distance.
