	Hilandar Research Library Text Presentation
		Hilandar was built in 1198 by St. Simeon, Stephan Nemanja, a former ruler of Serbia, and his two sons, St. Sava and Stephan the First-Crowned.
		Among the treasures of the Hilandar Monastery is the famous Diptych of Euphemia (from the end of the 14th century).
		The name "Hilandar" is retained as part of this library's name to honor the initiative and concern of the monks of the Hilandar Monastery for the preservation of that which is in their keeping.

		The graphics of Hilandar are contained in a collection of 55 copperplate engravings from the 18th and 19th century printed in the Hilandar Monastery typography.
		At the beginning of the XIXth century the Hilandar Monastery was the first to obtain a copper engraving press with a wooden structure, bound with metal bolts, and metal rolls where plates from other monasteries were also printed.
		Thus it was fitting for Hilandar to publish the first collection of graphics and initiate the study of forgotten copper matrices in other monasteries on Mount Athos.

		Hilandar and the Sveta Gora lost freedom in 1430, and for almost 5 centuries lived under the Turkish reign - till 1912.
		Hilandar entered the XVIII century aiming to fortify its position by strengthening connections with the orthodox Slavic population.
		Beside the help from Russia which from the ruler was transferred to the Russian Sacred Synod, the inhabitants of Hilandar turned to the Metropolitan of Karlovci and Serbian church municipalities in the South Hungary.

		This exhibition is the result of the collaborative efforts of the Romanian Ministry of Culture, the National Museum of Art of Romania, the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the Friendship League Romania-Serbia.

	The Life of St. Sava of Serbia
		Hilandar Monastery was once a small monastic settlement which had fallen into ruin for many years.
		The Typikon of Hilandar (rules and regulations governing the communal prayer life of the monastery) was based upon the Greek Typikon of the Monastery of the Theotokos the Grace-giver in Constantinople, St. Sava's favorite Imperial monastery.

		However, the material remains of our mediaeval health culture - surgical instruments, pharmacists´ sets and dishes, various glass and ceramic ampullas for medicines and similar, are preserved in a considerable number in monastery treasures or are being found during the archeological excavations.
		On this photograph, there are four dishes or mortars which were used in Hilandar hospital, acctualy in pharmacy at hand preparation of medicines and balms.
		These remarkable examples from the old Hilandar pharmacy have parallels with Greek and Italian pharmacists´ dishes from the late Middle Ages, and similar pieces can also be found in the remains of the monastery pharmacies of old Serbia.

		In 1198, together they moved to and restored the abandoned Hilandar monastery, which at that time became the center of Serbian Orthodox Christian monastic life.
		In the end, Sava accepted and was consecrated in Nicea on the Feast of St. Nicholas, December 6, 1219, becoming the first Archbishop of the newly autocephalous Orthodox Church of Serbia.
		After visiting Constantinople, Sava intended to visit the Holy Mountain and Hilandar, but "it did not please the Holy Spirit." Instead, he left for Trnovo, Bulgaria, the capital of King Ivan Asen II's Bulgarian kingdom and patriarch of Trnovo.

		During the following years, the abbey received many benefits and treasures from the Serbian kings and in that way, it acquired the largest -next to Lavra's- share of land in the Athos peninsula.

		LONDON -- Tuesday – Prince Charles has pledged 650,000 euros for the reconstruction of the Serbian Orthodox Hilandar Monastery in Greece, after fire devastated the fourteenth century building earlier this month.
		The prince is a regular visitor to the Holy Mount, where the monastery is located.
		At first I wasn't sure which Monastery they were talking about -- then I remembered that when it comes to the Hilandar, "there can be only one".
