The Elephant Six Recording Company - New York Times - March 11, 2001
n their low-slung Denver living room last fall, Robert Schneider and Hilarie Sidney were talking about what it means for musicians to sell out.
Robert sat on the carpet, jittery and animated under a wisp of sandy hair; his wife, Hilarie, who was eight months pregnant with their first child, offered cookies.
Hilarie could still remember the breathless thrill of discovering her favorite band, Pavement, and the loss she felt when they became popular, available to just anyone.

Hilarie Sidney said she always wanted her own band, but didn't have the time.
Known for her brilliant work as the drummer for The Apples in stereo, Hilarie met Per Ole Bratset in Norway during an Apples tour in 2002.
Traveling to Norway with her laptop and a few microphones in her backpack, Hilarie recorded the rest of the album's songs with Per in a hotel room in Oslo.

But near the end of the show, Robert Schneider revealed to the audience that the performance they were witnessing would be the last with Hilarie Sidney as drummer.
Hilarie Sidney, we fucking loved you as a member of The Apples in Stereo (and still do, damn it!).
Hilarie's a fantastic person and to call her a key member of the Apples doesn't even do her justice.

With The Apples In Stereo drummer Hilarie Sidney moving from behind the kit onto guitar and vocals, it’s a surprisingly aggressive affair, but the sickly sweet boy/girl vocal interplay firmly cements its place in the indie pop domain.
Sidney’s sugarcoated voice rides the power pop guitars and charging backbeat with hooks aplenty, but, unfortunately, no other song on the album surges with such vigor.
Sidney’s male foil, vocalist Per Ole (Palermo), bears a striking resemblance to Sonic Youth’s Thurston Moore, and his deadpan delivery balances out Sidney’s little girl lilt, which is the aural equivalent of eating too much cotton candy.

Nor had Jim.) Jim introduced me to Hilarie Sidney, his roommate, who also loved Beach Boys and the Beatles too, and also loved Pavement's singles, the Tall Dwarfs, the Unrest and other great underground stuff which turned out to be right up my pop-obsessed alley.
By fall Chris and I decided we should ask Jim and Hilarie to play in the band, and by winter we were practicing.

But it is nice to see Hilarie write her own songs and go her own direction without Robert.

DOA - The High Water Marks - Songs About the Ocean
Hilarie Sidney and Per Ole Bratset of The Applies in Stereo and Palermo, respectively, have combined efforts to offer a girl-boy attack of frenetic indie pop on Songs About the Ocean.
Some of the tracks have charm, but the volume knob should have been flicked downward in the recording studio, as the speedy songs suffer from a distasteful, ear-piercing sameness.
Songs About the Ocean opens with “Good I Feel Bad,” in which Sidney demonstrates some of her better vocals on the album, and Bratset contributes a fair amount of lines.

Robert recalls "I asked him what kind of music he liked, and in the heyday of grunge he thought a safe way to end the conversation would be to tell me his favorite band was the Beach Boys.
Jim played bass and Hilarie drummed in a band called Von Hemmling (begun in junior high school by Jim and his cousin) with various friends.
Robert was impressed by their band: "I wanted to have a band too, and it seemed easy the way they did it: friends making friendly music." By the winter, Robert and Chris had asked Jim and Hilarie to join them and The Apples In Stereo were formed.

But even the band's creation myth was born out of The Beach Boys, as lead singer/songwriter (and Sidney's husband) Rob Schneider tried to broach conversation with original member (and Hilarie's then-roommate) Jim McIntyre on the bus to their university, asking about his favourite band.
Over the years, Schneider and Sidney became a couple, married and had a son named Max, all the while dropping expert exercises in contemporary psychedelia, mining the past not for mere retro touchstones but to build a bridge connecting the two eras.
With plenty of time to work on the songs (Max's birth meant some of the songs have been lying around awhile), the Apples' old-fashioned harmonies, crunchy guitar riffs, spiralling organ solos and lo-fi melodic fuzz are undeniably effective on Velocity of Sound.

Anachronistic in sound and refreshingly irony-free, Colorado transplants and Apples principals John Hill (guitars) and couple Robert Schneider (everything but drums) and Hilarie Sidney (drums) have grown from a slight indie band to an orchestral psychedelic pop group that makes dense, beautiful records that owe mountains to Pet Sounds.
Sidney is talking from a hotel room in Montreal, where the clerks answer in French and the Apples are stopped for a night with Son Volt (in what has to classify as one of the weirder concert bills of the year).
She concedes that the constant Colorado sunshine energizes both her and the band -- "Denver has that effect on a lot of people; maybe it's because the air is thinner" -- and agrees that Evolution represents an, uh, evolution.

Driven by the Denver-based husband-and-wife team of singer-songwriter-producer Robert Schneider and drummer-singer Hilarie Sidney, the Apples in Stereo sound sort of like their name.
They sound like you'd imagine a band to sound with albums called Fun Trick Noisemaker, Tone Soul Evolution, and The Discovery of a World Inside the Moone.
But if Rubber Soul/Revolver/Magical Mystery Tour would seem to be the holy trinity in Schneider and Sidney's personal pop canon, their intense formal commitment to Sixties rock and pop is deeper, and far more gauche, than that.
