 January 13, Every-Day Book
In the early ages of Christianity the whole year was one continued term for hearing and deciding causes; but after the establishment of the Romish church, the daily dispensation of justice was prohibited by canonical authority, that the festivals might be kept holy.
Therefore at the beginning of each term the court does not sit for despatch of business till the fourth, or the appearance day, which is in Hilary term, for instance, on the 23rd of January.
These are termed Grand days in the inns of court; and Gaudy days at the two universities; they are observed as Collar days at the king's court of St. James's, for on these days, knights wear the collars of their respective orders.

PART II Tutorial Observation and Interviewing
From the 22 students participating in Michaelmas Term, one left Oxford in Hilary Term for personal reasons and another one had to be excluded from the observation because of timetable clashes and because the observation and recording of material in one of the four colleges was drastically reduced in Hilary Term.
In the beginning however the degree of self-consciousness, mostly on the part of the tutors, is slightly higher and so was the number of instances in which the tutor would break the tacit rule of the researcher's invisibility and address her during a session.
A slight increase in these instances has been observed towards the end of Hilary Term where all participants and the researcher felt the reasons for a strict attachment to the rules of minimally participant observation were no longer required.

The terms were so constituted as to avoid the major ecclesiastical festivals (Christmas and Easter, though not Whitsun) and the periods immediately preceding and succeeding them and so as to ensure that the court did not sit during Lent or harvest-time.
The term regularly ran on past Septuagesima but ended before the beginning of Lent, perhaps because of the ecclesiastical prohibition on the taking of oaths during Lent: the differing lengths of the term were determined by the different dates for the beginning of Lent.
The Michaelmas sittings shall commence on the 2nd of November and terminate on the 21st of December; the Hilary sittings shall commence on the 11th of January and terminate on the Wednesday before Easter; the Easter sittings shall commence on the Tuesday after Easter week and terminate on the Friday before Whitsunday.

`Next term, we hope to build on the physical strength that we have gained this term, and to develop both the first and second eights into two powerful crews for Summer Eights.
And the filth [Tony rowed in Isis in 1982 during the Dan Topolski coaching era, hence the liberal use of pejorative terms such as `tab' and `filth' when referring to our Fenland brethren.] rowed past us when we were down to 6 men but luckily the press only reported their victory against London Rowing Club.

Lincoln College - College News - Hilary Term Entz
Hilary certainly proved to be a time for New Year’s resolutions as the college team shunned the usual Thursday night exodus to infamous nightclub Filth in favour of a trip to the comedy club Jongleurs.
Although predictably the students sometimes became the butt of the jokes, Lincoln gave as good as it got, and enjoyed a night which temporarily took their minds off the first essay of term.
By the middle of term, love was clearly in the air, with those who missed out on the RAG blind date — or wished they had — having another crack at romance at the Valentine’s Ball at Freud’s.

Against guerrilla movements, for example, the idea of winning the war by pitting a better unit of a certain kind of weapon against the enemy’s unit of this kind of weapon is misleading since guerrillas mostly evade pitched battles and certainly superior weapons systems.
Indeed, local wars, regional warfare and low intensity conflict were understood predominantly in state-centric terms: Russian military thinking found it difficult to internalize forms of conflict involving irregular operations, especially those undertaken by sub-state military formations.
But even in the second Chechnya campaign, the Russian military has failed to develop a more modern professional counterinsurgency operation and Russian commanders have rejected the strategic lesson that the use of force, irrespective of how it is packaged, has limited utility in such an asymmetrical conflict.
