  History
Hilbre Bird Observatory was established in 1957 by a group of keen local bird watchers who had met on the island during the preceding years and who had concluded that it would be a good base to study birds, particularly migratory ones.
The work of the Bird Observatory on Hilbre was soon recognised by the local Council (who own the island) as being important and in 1962 they provided a new, purpose built thirty foot cabin with eight birth bunk room, transported to Hilbre and this became the Observatory’s new home.
In the same year, Hilbre Bird Observatory members reconstructed the sea-watching hide making it larger and cladding it with sandstone so that it blended in with the old Life Boat Station at the north end of the island.

The three islands that form the Hilbre chain of islands are known individually as Little Eye, Middle Hilbre and the main island of Hilbre itself.

The reason we believe that Hilbre’s Turnstones are from Greenland and/or Arctic Canada is that we have caught a bird that had been ringed in Iceland and we have alsohad a recovery of one of our birds also in Iceland.
