Hilda Solis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Solis was able to obtain the support of Miguel Contreras and labor unions, which mobilized a significant amount of volunteers to help Solis win.
Solis was not without her own controversy, though, as her plan to lower the carpool restrictions on the El Monte Busway resulted in an uproar from bus riders and carpoolers that used the busway.
Solis was born in Los Angeles, California, was educated at Cal Poly Pomona and the USC, and served in the White House Office of Hispanic Affairs, as an analyst with the Office of Management and Budget, and as a member of the California State Assembly and the California State Senate before entering the House.

Hilda Solis was born in Los Angeles and lives in El Monte, Calif. Solis received her bachelor's degree from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona in 1979, then earned her master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California in 1981.
Hilda Solis was able to win the 2000 primary by convincing residents of the district that Matthew Martinez, who was never seriously challenged in winning nine consecutive terms, was not representing the district properly.
Solis, who was a stark contrast to her primary opponent, was a favorite among Democrats who felt that she would be an even bigger asset in Washington than Martinez.

Online NewsHour: @the Capitol -- Hilda Solis, New Members
Hilda Solis represents what might be called the other L.A. Crisscrossed by miles of concrete freeways, scarred with abandoned quarries and landfill sites, California's 31st Congressional District seems a world away from the glamour of Hollywood.
Solis, 43, comes to Washington as a traditional Democrat: supporting abortion rights and gun control, looking for ways the federal government can do more to help a district battered by high unemployment, a housing shortage, polluted water and smog.
So far, Solis says, she has learned the ropes quickly but is disappointed by the early victories of the Bush administration in rolling back environmental protection and workplace regulations designed to reduce injuries.
