Hilda Solis was born in Los Angeles and lives in El Monte, Calif. Solis received her bachelor's degree from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona in 1979, then earned her master's degree in Public Administration from the University of Southern California in 1981.
In 1994, Solis was elected to California's 24th State Senate district and was re-elected in 1998 with 73 percent of the vote.
Hilda Solis was able to win the 2000 primary by convincing residents of the district that Matthew Martinez, who was never seriously challenged in winning nine consecutive terms, was not representing the district properly.
