Lay Of Hildebrand - LoveToKnow 1911
LAY OF HILDEBRAND (Das Hildebrandslied), a unique example of Old German alliterative poetry, written about the year Boo on the first and last pages of a theological manuscript, by two monks of the monastery of Fulda.
But in the later traditions, both of the Old Norse Thidreks saga (13th century), and the so-called Jiingere Hildebrandslied - a German popular lay, preserved in several versions from the 15th to the 17th centuryHadubrand is simply represented as defeated, and obliged to recognize his father.
The Old High German Hildebrandslied is dramatically conceived, and written in a terse, vigorous style; it is the only remnant that has come down from early Germanic times of an undoubtedly extensive ballad literature, dealing with the national sagas.

 Informat.io on Lay Of Hildebrand
The Middle High German Jüngeres Hildebrandslied (probably 13th Century) tells a similar story of the treacherous blow, the taunt that the son was taught to fight by a woman, and the final reconciliation.
Although there is no evidence that Hildebrand himself was a historical character, the background to the poem is formed by historical events in 6th century Italy, where the Ostrogothic King Theodoric fought for mastery of Italy against Odoacer, the Germanic general who had deposed the last Roman Emperor.
The Hildebrandslied hints at Theodoric's legendary (and historically incorrect) connection with Attila, which is also seen in the Nibelungenlied.

 Dietrich Legend
Apart from the Nibelungenlied and the Hildebrandslied, I haven't had much luck about finding translations of the tales about Dietrich stories, itself.
As I had mentioned in the previous article (Deitrich), there are a number of Middle High German poems, between the 13th and 15th century, about Dietrich or his companions.
Hildebrandslied was a fragmented alliterative heroic poem, written in Old High German, probably in the early 9th century.

 Literary Encyclopedia: The Hildebrandslied
The Hildebrandslied begins with the meeting of a father and son on opposing sides of the battlefield, each heading an army.
The Hildebrandslied belongs to a number of works associated with the legend of Dietrich of Bern, who is one of the most popular characters of medieval German literature.
The Hildebrandslied may be based on an orally transmitted poem and the variety of different linguistic forms may indicate that it originally stemmed from a region other than Fulda, where it was eventually copied.

The only surviving fragment of OHG alliterative lay is the "Hildebrandslied." This heroic lay consists of 68 lines.
The story is regarded as being of Langobardic origin and is thought to have originated in the 7th century, because of its connection to Dietrich von Bern.
The "Hildebrandslied" tells of the encounter between Hildebrand, a voluntary exile with his king, Dietrich, and his son Hadubrand.

 Old High German Literature
In this anthology the period is represented by the Hildebrandslied, passages from two Gospel harmonies, Heliand and the Evangelienbuch of Otfried von Weißenburg, and the Ludwigslied.
It tells in this short space the whole story of the meeting between the father Hildebrand and his son Hadubrand, of the father’s discovery that he is to face his own son in combat, of his attempt to avoid the impending conflict without telling his son who he is, and of the final outcome.
The meter of the Hildebrandslied is thus the same as that found in the Anglo-Saxon Beowulf and the Old Saxon Heliand, but the vicissitudes of transmission have produced considerable irregularities, so that some lines cannot be scanned according to the rules.

Hildebrand was one of the warrior kings the German and Scandinavian hero songs are known for.
Hildebrand figures in three famous songs: in the Old High German Hildebrandslied, the Middle High German Nibelungenlied, and in the Old Norse song Hildebrand's death in Ásmundar saga kappabana (called Hildibrandr).
In the Hildebrandslied, which is probably older, Hildebrand fights his own son Hadubrand.

The history of the German language begins with the High German consonant shift during the Migration period, separating South Germanic dialects from common West Germanic.
The earliest testimonies of Old High German are from scattered Elder Futhark inscriptions, especially in Alemannic, from the 6th century, the earliest glosses (Abrogans) date to the 8th and the oldest coherent texts (the Hildebrandslied, the Muspilli and the Merseburg Incantations) to the 9th century.
Old Saxon at this time belongs to the North Sea Germanic cultural sphere, and Low Saxon should fall under German rather than Anglo-Frisian influence during the Holy Roman Empire.
