That Hildegard Behrens was able to convey any of those ideas so fully, outside of their operatic context and without benefit of a full orchestra, is a sure sign of an extraordinary power to transport listeners to another realm.
Behrens' steely dramatic soprano destined her for the Wagner and Strauss repertory that made her a star in Munich, Vienna and Paris as well as New York.
Behrens sings three challenging operatic scenes in her Dec. 11 recital: Kostelnicka's aria from the second act of Janacek's Jenufa, Elektra's Monologue and Brunnhilde's Immolation Scene from Wagner's Götterdaämmerung.

Behrens' calendar over the past few seasons featured the world premiere of Cronaca del Luogo, a new opera composed specifically for her by Luciano Berio, which opened the Salzburg Festival in the summer of 1999.
Behrens’ versatility as an artist is demonstrated by her forays outside of her German repertoire.
Born in Varel-Oldenburg, a small town on the northern coast of Germany, Hildegard Behrens graduated from Law School at the University of Freiburg, where she subsequently studied voice at the conservatory.

Sung by Hildegard Behrens and Placido Domingo, the performance was a "big event," which drew a dressy audience including many celebrities.
Behrens proved a disappointment as the opera singer Floria Tosca, although she sang exceedingly well.
As vocally unusual as Behrens is, however, she does have a certain hypnotic presence that makes for a totally unusual but not completely unrewarding Floria Tosca.

Hildegard Behrens, a German/Wagnerian soprano, follows in the footsteps of Birgit Nilsson as Tosca.
Hildegard Behrens is OK in the role but, like Birgit Nilsson, she is accused of being too Wagnerian, too German, when the role of Tosca is the epitome of Italian womanhood.
Tosca is played by Hildegard Behrens who appears to be slightly past he sell by when this film was made in 1985.

Hildegard Behrens (Marie) has rarely sounded better, and switches between Straussian lushness and spiky sluttishness with ease.
The direction is also full of wonderful touches, such as Wozzeck squeezing the Captain's nose while he's shaving him (and making his voice sound like a kazoo), and the musicians of the on-stage band being fully integrated into the tavern scene.
Behrens sings beautifully, shading her powerful voice down for Marie's prayer (one of the high points of this opera).

Behrens heard some boos when she answered the final curtain.
The music and story continue to speak to me; I was particularly aware of the poignancy of Wotan's predicament: unable to control events despite his great power, the father of the Gods captive to the sweep of events, bound by his own behavior (treaties, offspring, promises) to frustrate his own desires.

Behrens somewhat surprises me as Salome is not the ideal role for her, but she pulls it off beautifully.
Behrens herself is a wonderful singer, but she puts a distance between herself and Salome's lurid decadence.

The ravishing music is not solely instrumental, of course; the principal cast--Gary Lakes (Siegmund), Jessye Norman (Sieglinde), Hildegard Behrens (Brünnhilde), and especially James Morris (Wotan)--more than handles the vocal and acting demands, even those long stretches of unbelievably difficult singing passages that Wagner demands.
(and tell me if you agree that Norman's costume seems to come from another opera!) But Hildegard Behrens' Brunhilde makes us believe she is a vibrant teenager, although she has to strain to keep her voice from petering out during this difficult role.
Hildegard Behrens (who I have also seen live many years ago) sings the role of Brunnhilde.
