Hildreth Meiere (1892-1961) was a mural artist of some renown during her lifetime.
Meiere's designs, ranging from traditional historical realism to Art Deco, reflected many of the tensions that surface in mid-twentieth century American culture, as a modernism accommodated the wishes of Americans in positions of power.
Meiere's relationship to her clients represents less familiar areas of women's cultural and social history.

Hildreth Meiere, the artist who created the tile designs, got her inspiration and scientific accuracy from Erwin Hinckley Barbour, the former director of the State Museum.
Barbour was a Yale-trained, Ph.D. paleontologist with a national reputation and an artistic bent, who spent more than 50 years collecting artifacts for the museum.
The Capitol archives have 24 of Barbour's original sketches, used by Meiere as she designed the tile mosaic.
