Hill County is a county located in the state of Texas.
The county is named for George Washington Hill, a secretary of war and secretary of the navy under the Republic of Texas.
In the county, the population is spread out with 25.90% under the age of 18, 8.50% from 18 to 24, 24.90% from 25 to 44, 23.40% from 45 to 64, and 17.30% who are 65 years of age or older.

A petition was circulated on September 19, 1852, to carve a new county from Navarro County.
Dyer was elected county judge; Charley Davis, sheriff; C. Brooks, county and district clerk as well as the first justice of the peace; and Thomas Steiner (brother of Dr. Steiner), one of the county commissioners.
Hill County's population began to decline after 1910, falling to 43,036 in 1930, 31,282 in 1950, and 22,596 in 1970.

Both Hill County and Hillsboro are named for Dr. George W. Hill, a pioneer Navarro County settler who served both as a congressman and as Secretary of War for the Republic of Texas.
It took the county five tries to build a courthouse that they could be proud of.
