BBC - Shropshire - History - Old Oswestry hill fort
Old Oswestry has been described as the finest example of an Iron Age hill fort in the Marches, and this is mainly because of its highly elaborate defences.
This is perhaps out of necessity - the hill upon which Old Oswestry sits is unusually low for an iron age hill fort and so it may have been necessary to have more complex ramparts.
Much of the perimeter of the fort is surrounded by a series of five ramparts and ditches, designed to slow any forces attempting to attack the settlement.
