Hillclimbing (sometimes known as speed hillclimbing) is a branch of motorsport in which drivers compete against the clock to complete an uphill course.
In Britain, hillclimbing is considered a spectator sport, and the most prestigious events, such as those that form part of the British Hillclimb Championship, often attract several thousand enthusiasts to the hills.
Track lengths are traditionally quoted in yards: the longest hillclimb course used in the British Championship is Harewood at 1583 yards (1447 meters), and the shortest is Barbon Manor at 880 yards (805m).

Hillclimbs in continental Europe are usually held on courses which are several kilometres long, taking advantage of the available hills and mountains including the Alps.

All too often speed-hillclimbing is simply referred to incorrectly as hillclimbing and naturally enough is confused with trialling, which is an endeavour to drive a car or motorcycle up a steep muddy track.
Speed-hillclimbing is, as the name suggests, a fast controlled ascent of a pre-arranged course and although not quite as old as the hills, is certainly as old as the motor car, having been first staged at the turn of the century.
Originally the competitions were held on public roads; thus any decent hill could be used for the assault, but in 1924 the RAC put an end to this practise and the participants were forced to find private roads to continue their sport.

Hillclimbing is: repeat make a random small change in the approximate solution if the error does not increase, keep this as the new approximate solution until (hopefully) a solution is reached (error = 0) To illustrate, lets think of using hillclimbing to find a latin square of order 4.
First method: We might start with the approximate solution X 1 2 2 4 3 2 2 1 1 4 1 4 3 3 4 1 It is natural to take the error in a row or a column to be the number of missing entries causing it to not be a pemutation of 1,..,4.
NOTE: The hillclimbing may make its way into a region of the search space from which there are relatively few "reasonably short" special paths to a solution.

Abstract: This paper introduces a new analysis tool called reverse hillclimbing, and demonstrates how it can be used to evaluate the performance of a genetic algorithm.
Using reverse hillclimbing, one can calculate the exact probability that hillclimbing will attain some point in a landscape.
From this, the expected number of evaluations before the point is found by hillclimbing can be calculated.

We first explore the performance of one of the most elementary of these algorithms, known as hillclimbing or randomized greedy, on the minimum bisection problem.
We then investigate the performance of hillclimbing relative to a class of global optimization algorithms known as genetic algorithms (GAs).
We show that simple hillclimbing algorithms can outperform GAs on problem instances for which the GAs were specifically designed in the literature.

Stochastic Hillclimbing as a Baseline Method for Evaluating Genetic Algorithms | EECS at UC Berkeley   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
We investigate the effectiveness of stochastic hillclimbing as a baseline for evaluating the performance of genetic algorithms (GAs) as combinatorial function optimizers.
In particular, we address four problems to which GAs have been applied in the literature: the maximum cut problem, Koza's 11-multiplexer problem, MDAP (the Multiprocessor Document Allocation Problem), and the jobshop problem.
We demonstrate that simple stochastic hillclimbing methods are able to achieve results comparable or superior to those obtained by the GAs designed to address these four problems.

The remaining runs of Lang's hillclimbing algorithm wandered around at various suboptimal fitness levels for the final 99% or so of the 4,800,000 steps allowed in each run.
Lang's hillclimbing runs didn't succeed after giving it a generous number of steps (4,800,000) because of the well known tendency of probabilistic hillclimbing algorithms to not make any progress for very long stretches of time.
The proposed hillclimbing algorithm is a pasting together of an approach that Lang's paper concedes doesn't work with an ineffective and irrelevant approach that provably can't work.
