Hillman lived in England for two years before emigrating to the United States in 1907.
Hillman was a member of the Socialist Party but impressed by the policies of Franklin D. Roosevelt when governor of New York, became a supporter of the Democratic Party.
In 1933 Roosevelt appointed Hillman as a member of his Labor Advisory Board and during the Second World War was associate director of the Office of Production Management.
In February 1970, the HillmanAvenger was launched to the public, and immediately the press was taken by its overall competence on the road, and smart contemporary styling.
The initial road tests were positive, and the HillmanAvenger did carve itself a favourable niche with the motoring press.
