Hillman Avenger - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Introduced in February 1970, the Avenger was significant as it was the first and last car to be developed by Rootes after the Chrysler takeover in 1967.
In 1976 the Avenger was rebadged as a Chrysler.
Towards the end of the 1970s, the Avenger was being increasingly outclassed by the new generation of modern front-wheel drive hatchbacks such as the VW Golf, Renault 14 and Fiat Ritmo/Strada.

Hillman - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hillman was a famous British automobile manufacturer, based in Ryton-on-Dunsmore, near Coventry, England from 1907 to 1976.
A complete departure in 1963 was the Hillman Imp using a Coventry Climax all alloy, 875 cc rear engine and built in a brand new factory in Linwood, Scotland.
The Avenger and Hunter ranges were rebadged as Chryslers until 1979 when Chrysler sold its European division to Peugeot.

 Hillman Avenger
This was the first Hillman Avenger web page and has grown to be the definitive resource for information on the Hillman Avenger, also known or built as the Plymouth Cricket, Chrysler Avenger, Talbot Avenger and occasionally the Sunbeam 1250/1500, VW1500, VW1800 and Dodge Polara.
Anyone who is unconvinced at the thought that went under the bonnet of the Hillman Avenger should compare the inlet manifold from the carburetor of an Avenger to a similarly aged Ford Escort.
The Avenger was not a great departure from other vehicle designs of the time, but it did bring together many of the best elements of the technology available, and added careful suspension design to the mix.

Think of the name Hillman these days and there would be a large proportion of our readers who have never even heard the name, much less associated Hillman with rally cars.
But 30 years ago, Hillman, part of the Rootes Group of companies, introduced their all-new Hillman Avenger, an Escort-sized 2 and 4-door family car that was designed to take on Ford's top-selling car.
It was a frustrating and agonising 4 years since the car's inception before the Avenger BRM got to appear in rally trim, but a victory in a couple of small British events didn't impress the public too much, let alone O'Dell.

The name Avenger was originally used on the Hillman Avenger, produced by Rootes Group while that company was owned by the Chrysler Corporation.
The Avenger, along with the similar Chrysler Sebring coupe, were built by Diamond Star Motors, a joint venture between Chrysler Corporation and Mitsubishi Motors, on a stretched Mitsubishi Galant platform.
The Avenger had a 103 in (2.62 m) wheelbase and used either a 2.0 L I4(420A) or a Mitsubishi-designed 2.5 L V6.The 4-cylinder was coupled to either a five-speed manual transmission, shared with the Eclipse and Talon, or a 4-speed automatic.

the Hillman Avenger and Tiger and Dodge 1800 cars
Avengers were used by quite a few of the Midlands, Northern England and Scotland forces as a police patrol car, particularly in the late 1970s; the 1600cc engine made 81hp in standard form, and could make more with a little messing.
Model changes were similar to the UK built Avengers, although the speedometers went totally metric at the beginning of 1974 (as a legal requirement for all vehicles made after 1973 in New Zealand) and that the facelifted (Mk2 / Series 2) models entered production at the beginning of 1977.
The Avenger was also made by Chrysler do Brasil from 1971 to 1980 as the Dodge 1500 (and 1800) and, later, the Dodge Polara (a name applied to a much larger car in the US).

The Avenger had special 16 valve BRM engines fitted in a choice of capacities including 1598cc,1798cc and even a 2000cc version.

Chrysler wanted the Avenger to be a "world car", and took the ambitous step of marketing the Avenger as the Plymouth Cricket in the United States, but poor build quality, unreliability plus American apathy towards small cars saw it being withdrawn after only two years.
The largest change was at the rear where on the sedans, the distinctive "L"-shaped rear lamp clusters were dropped in favour of a straight 'light-bar' arrangement.
This was intended to compete in the lower "supermini" class, and later became a successful rally car, after it was treated to an engine transplant courtsy of Lotus.

The Hillman Avenger, Plymouth Cricket, and Chrysler Sunbeam
To understand the Plymouth Cricket we once again look across the Pond to Chrysler UK, who at the time of the car's UK introduction in 1970 were still known as the Rootes Group with the Hillman, Singer, Sunbeam and Commer (commercial vehicle) brands.
Obviously someone at Chrysler US must have seen the subcompact herd coming (in the form of the AMC Gremlin, Chevrolet Vega and Ford Pinto) and decided that Chrysler (or more accurately Plymouth, who was seen to provide more basic transportation, as opposed to sporty Dodge and luxurious Chrysler) needed a competing product.

After Chris had taken a photo of the Avenger on the trailer, coupled up to the van which was now crammed full of all manner of spares, I very carefully began my journey back up to North Wales and home.
