Hillston is a small rural town situated 110 km North-West of Griffith, on the Lachlan River.
Hillston began in 1863 when a Hotel was built at the place where wagons and coaches crossed the Lachlan River.
Hillston Central began in 1875 when Mr R McKenzie, opened the town’s first school in April.

Despite being the largest town in Carrathool shire Hillston is basically a small country town (population 1030) which serves the surrounding wheat and wool district.
Hillston is unexpectedly green due to its situation on top one of the NSW's highest-producing and best quality artesian basins which irrigate a massive orange orchard, covering 350 ha.
It was renamed Hillston when the first post office opened in 1869 to avoid confusion with another Redbank.

One of the parks is the former site of the orignial Hillston Hall, and this now has well landscaped gardens which lead to the swining bridge across the River.
Hillston main street is a delightful walking tour for tourists, many shops still trading as in bygone days.

Jane Hillston, from the University's School of Informatics, is the first winner of the newly-created Roger Needham Award for outstanding British computer research.
The primary research vehicle for Jane Hillston, formerly a lecturer in computer science and currently a reader at the School of Informatics, is an IS modelling language which she created and named Performance Evaluation Process Algebra (PEPA), and which is already receiving accolades from computing theoreticians and practitioners.
At a special awards ceremony she was presented with a cheque for £5,000 by Luca Cardelli, Assistant Director of Microsoft Research Cambridge, and she has been invited to present a public lecture on her research at the Royal Society later this year.

Carrathool Shire Council is calling on local residents to help lobby for a new police sergeant at Hillston.
He says council action resulted in new police officers being appointed in Goolgowi and Carrathool, but questions about when the Hillston position will be filled, or even advertised, have been ignored.
The call for action comes as Hillston prepares to build seasonal accommodation for 80 people during the summer harvest.

Dr Jane Hillston, a reader in Edinburgh University’s Division of Informatics, won the award for developing Performance Evaluation Process Algebra (PEPA), a formal description language which can be used to represent the behaviour of systems in a rigorous and quantified way.
Dr Hillston will introduce PEPA, giving examples of its use and explaining some of the underlying theory and algebra that has allowed its practical application to a wide range of systems.
