Topic: Hillis

In the News (Wed 23 Dec 09)

  W. Daniel Hillis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hillis is a member of the Global Business Network and founded Thinking Machines which developed the Connection Machine; a computer that employs parallel distributed processing (PDP).
Hillis' biggest stab at fame and fortune was Thinking Machines Inc., a firm that lasted 11 years, created the world’s fastest parallel computing hardware at the time, yet failed to either create a thinking computer program or make Hillis fabulously wealthy.
Hillis’ system, on the other hand, had the flexibility of the brain – each processor could do what it wanted when it wanted – which led to the possibility of computational chaos, intelligent coordinated activity, or most intriguing, the combination of the two.

SPECIAL RELATIVITY: WHY CAN'T YOU GO FASTER THAN LIGHT? — An Essay by W. Daniel Hillis
Danny Hillis, physicist and computer scientist, brings together, in full circle, many of the ideas circulating among third culture thinkers: Marvin Minsky's society of mind; Christopher G. Langton's artificial life; Richard Dawkins' gene's-eye view; the plectics practiced at Santa Fe.
At MIT in the late seventies, Hillis built his "connection machine," a computer that makes use of integrated circuits and, in its parallel operations, closely reflects the workings of the human mind.
Marvin Minsky says "Danny Hillis is one of the most inventive people I've ever met, and one of the deepest thinkers." Philosopher Daniel C. Dennett says, "what Danny did was to create if not the first then one of the first really practical, really massive, parallel computers.

Hillis, at first motivated by a vague desire to promote long-term thinking, has been transformed by his idea: "Now I think about people who will live 10,000 years from now as real people." His eyes take on a distant focus as he says this, as if he sees them massed on the horizon.
Universally called Danny, Hillis is affable and witty but tends to veer abruptly into subjects like lattice theory, which "describes a piece of graph paper in n dimensions," and from there the conversation becomes a labyrinth impossible to negotiate.
Hillis is still mulling how to handle that, but he knows for sure that the final clock will somehow mirror the positions of the planets relative to the stars and to one another.
