Ten months ago, Hilo joined The Century Program (TCP) with support from American Savings Bank, and Christian was part of his high school's first group of TCP Scholars, as selected students are known.
Hilo is creating a strong partnership with the University of Hawaii at Hilo, and the liaison between the two institutions, Melissa Johnson, is a graduate of the high school and serves as the university's Director of Student Support Services.
After FES Director of Mentoring Missy Wilkins visited Hilo in November, she wrote, "I was really impressed with the Hilo teachers and how invested they are with the students and the TCP program." To ensure that their TCP Scholars receive extra support, Hilo placed these students in smaller classes.

Hilo High School is located in a small city on the Island of Hawaii, often referred to as the Big Island.
If you are bringing a date who does not attend Hilo High, you will also need to turn in a copy of your date's picture ID. Rememeber: No ID copy means no permission form and no permission form means that you will not be able to attend.
Any student athlete who did not have a GPA of 2.0 or received a letter grade of “F” in a required course for graduation on your report card, and you were ineligible to participate in any athletic events for this past weekend.

A parent of two students who graduated from Hilo High School filed a federal lawsuit yesterday alleging school officials retaliated against him for complaining about derogatory racial remarks by assistant football coaches in 2003.
Hilo High officials could not be reached for comment yesterday.
Dearing's lawsuit said school officials retaliated by taking actions that included obtaining restraining orders against him and preventing him from attending his son Shawn Dearing's varsity football game.

 Hilo native named Scientist-in-Charge of Cascades Volcano Observatory
HVO is proud to report that Elliot T. Endo, long-time HVO associate and 1961 graduate of Hilo High School, has been named Scientist-in-Charge of the U.S. Geological Survey's Cascades Volcano Observatory (CVO) in Vancouver, Washington.
Elliot worked for Modern Camera while in high school, acquiring photographic and darkroom skills that enabled him to be the photographer for the 1961 Hilo High Yearbook.
His photographic talents were put to immediate use at HVO; many of the best fl and white photos in the HVO archive for the mid-1960s are Elliot's.

 Lawsuit to Stop Surf School in Hilo
A crew of surfers has joined the fight to bar a surfing school from operating in the surf on the Big Island at Honoli’i, a small river-fed bay that has several nice waves.
According to public records, the school needs an instructor’s permit to legally operate in the bay and the school does not have one.
The surfing area at Honoli’i is about 250 yards wide with a shelfing lefthander off the reef that empties into the river/channel and several cobbled beachbreak-type peaks on the right of the river.

The first prizes were awarded to Cody Lindsey, a 5th grader at E.B. DeSilva school in Hilo, and to Lori Kawamura, an 11th grader at Hilo High School.
Second prizes were awarded to Jasmine Kama, a 6th grader at Chieffess Kapiolani School in Hilo and to Robin Zirol, an 11th grader at Hilo High School.
Third prizes were given to Leanna Arizumi, a 5th grader at E.B. DeSilva School who interviewed Lillian Pua Kaaumoana, a survivor of the 1946 tsunami, and to Cassie Tatsuno an 11th grader at Hilo High School who interviewed Geri Wong, a survivor of the 1960 tsunami.
