A light and electron microscopic analysis of the mossy fibers of the rat dentate gyrus.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
The distribution of the collaterals within the hilar region is correlated with the location of the granule cell body.
Note that the mossy fiber passes directly from the hilus to CA, avoiding the proximal portion of the pyramidal cell layer; in this case the parent mossy fibers and two of the collaterals were cut (as indication by the filled circle at its termination) when the slice was made.
A diagram of the dentate gyrus and proximal portion of the hippocampus to summarize the major synaptic relationships of the mossy fibers.

hilus: The opening in the middle of the concave medial border for nerves and blood vessels to pass into the renal sinus.
Passing from the renal pelvis out of the hilus and down to the (A distensible membranous sac (usually containing liquid or gas)) bladder.
The ureter carries urine from the kidneys to the (A distensible membranous sac (usually containing liquid or gas)) bladder by means of (The process of wave-like muscle contractions of the alimentary tract that moves food along) peristalsis.

The Lungs - Wikimd   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Behind the hilus and the attachment of the pulmonary ligament is a vertical groove for the esophagus; this groove becomes less distinct below, owing to the inclination of the lower part of the esophagus to the left of the middle line.
Behind the hilus and pulmonary ligament is a vertical furrow produced by the descending aorta, and in front of this, near the base of the lung, the lower part of the esophagus causes a shallow impression.
It begins in the previous fissure near the posterior border of the lung, and, running horizontally forward, cuts the anterior border on a level with the sternal end of the fourth costal cartilage; on the mediastinal surface it may be traced backward to the hilus.

 Organs of Digestion
The hilus is pierced by several large, irregular apertures, for the entrance and exit of vessels and nerves.
At the margins of the hilus, the two layers of peritoneum are reflected from the surface of the organ on to the cardiac end of the stomach, forming the gastro-splenic omentum, which contains between its layers the splenic vessels and nerves, and the vasa brevia.
It invests the exterior of the organ, and at the hilus is reflected inwards upon the vessels in the form of vaginae or sheaths.

Chapter 22: The pleurae and lungs
The main bronchus enters the hilus and subdivides within the substance of the lung to form the "bronchial tree." The tubes of the tree carry air to the alveoli, where respiratory exchanges with the blood occur.
The anterior border of the lung corresponds to that of the pleura, although it is uncertain whether the costomediastinal recess of the pleura is completely filled by the lung during quiet breathing, as it is in deep inspiration.
The arteries at the hilus are visible radiographically and form a pattern that extends into the lung.

 Final Diagnosis -- Case 394
Ovarian hilus cells are morphologically similar to Leydig cells of the testes and are found in fetal ovaries then disappear during childhood to reappear at puberty.
Hilus cells should be distinguished from adrenal cortical rests in the mesovarium and lutein cells (thecal or stromal).
Hilus or Leydig cell tumors are included in the WHO classification under the heading of "Steroid Tumors" and are generally associated with a benign course.

A survey of the relation of hilus cell genesis and frequency of detection in ovaries to adenocarcinoma of the endometrium is presented.
The results showed that there was no statistical difference between the occurrence of hilus cells in the endometrial carcinoma group and a control group (33 and 25% respectively).
A surprisingly high incidence (60%) of ovarian hilus cells was found in patients who underwent radioinduced menopause for benign gynecologic conditions prior to developing adenocarcinoma of the endometrium.

Journal of Cerebral Blood Flow & Metabolism - Effects of the AMPA-Receptor Antagonist, NBQX, on Neuron Loss in ...
The nature of the SS neurons in the dentate hilus is controversial.
This is supported by the observation that AMPA binding increases postischemia in the outer molecular layer of the dentate gyrus (Diemer et al., 1987), which is deprived of axons after ischemic loss of hilar SS neurons (Bakst et al., 1986).
If we consider that the SS neurons in hilus reinforce granule cell excitation through feedback excitation, then increased recurrent granule cell inhibition after ischemia (Chang et al., 1989) may simply follow loss of SS neurons and their feedback excitation.

 The Urinary Organs
At the hilus, the vessels, excretory duct, and nerves pass into or from the organ; the branches of the renal vein lying in front, the artery and its branches next, the excretory duct or ureter being behind and below.
The hilus leads into a hollow space, the sinus, which occupies the interior of the gland.
It is thin, smooth, and easily removed from its surface, to which it is connected by fine fibrous processes and vessels; and at the hilus is continued inwards, lining the sides of the sinus, and at the bottom of that cavity forms sheaths around the blood-vessels, and the subdivisions of the excretory duct.

Essentially a funnel, the broad end of the renal pelvis accepts the urine and channels it out of the hilus into the ureter to be discharged to the urinary bladder.
Each of the two ureters is a narrow tube which measures approximately 14-18 inches long, and about 1/8 inch in diameter.
The ureters pass from the renal pelvis, within the kidneys, out of the hilus of each kidney, down the back of the abdominal cavity to the bladder.

The regions within the hippocampus scored for this study include the hilus, the granule cell layer (GCL, blue) and the subgranule zone (SGZ, green), which is a thin lamina at the boundary of the GCL and hilus.
Cell counts were made within the indicated GCL including a 50-µm hilar margin of the SGZ (blue and green areas combined) or within the hilus, b and c, Confocal micrograph (x10 magnification, zoom of 1) of the dentate gyrus in a control animal (b) and an irradiated animal (c).

APStracts 2:0253N, 1995.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-24)
Orthodromic stimulation of the commissural pathway from the hilus of the contralateral DG also evoked an inward current in the inner STM at a latency of 2-6 ms, which was 40-60% of the amplitude of the monosynaptic iEPSC.
These observations suggested that this current was most likely generated by a multisynaptic pathway involving the ipsilateral PP and the commissural pathway arising from the hilus of the DG.
Sequential propagation from the EC through a multisynaptic pathway that included the commissural pathway from the hilus of the DG bilaterally activated the proximal segments of granule cell dendrites at longer latencies.
