Himeji Station was opened by Sanyo Tetsudo (Sanyo railway, present Sanyo Main Line) in 1888.
Himeji Station was built bordering the old city walls, at the end of the main street (Ootemae-dori).
It is close to Sanyo Himeji Station on the Sanyo Electric Railway Main Line and Himeji Castle.

I am guessing that Himeji station has no more than two east bound Shinkansen tracks, on the same platform, so 5 minutes change should be a piece of cake.
Most likely the Himeji originated ones leave from the platform 13 while through trains use platform 11; it means you have to struggle with stairs, but it still is a better choice than changing trains at Shin Osaka.
Is there only one platform for all east bound Shinkansen trains at Himeji station?

We went back to the station to take a bus into the Gion district, where apparently all the traditional stuff is found.

The main road in town is Otemae Dori, a wide boulevard that stretches from Himeji Station north to Himeji Castle (you can walk the distance in about 15 min.).

Himeji castle is walking distance from the station but the tourist trap stores are quite boring.
I meant to say that Himeji is between Okayama and Osaka.
If you are hitting Himeji, you should really concentrate on Kobe instead of Osaka.
