HIMERUS : Greek god of sexual desire ; mythology ; pictures : HIMEROS
HIMEROS (or Himerus) was the god of sexual desire, one of the young Erotes (winged Love-Gods).
When the goddess Aphrodite first emerged new-born from the sea-foam's she was greeted by the twin loves Eros and Himeros.
Himeros was usually depicted as winged youth or child, as were the other Erotes.

APOD: 2000 October 26 - The Map Of Eros
The largest feature, Himeros, is a depression about 10 kilometers wide.
In Greek mythology, Himeros was an attendant of Eros and the personification of the longing of love.
Today, after safely surveying Eros for the past eight months, NEAR Shoemaker is scheduled to make a daring close approach to the asteroid, briefly flying to within about 6 kilometers of its surface.

  Interpretations
Himeros is extremely large crater, about 5.8 miles wide, covering a large portion of Eros' midsection.
Himeros is unusually saddle shaped, due to its immense size in proportion to Eros.
The Shoemaker crater is actually within Himeros, which is said to have caused much of the debris within Himeros and Shoemaker.

 H O L O S C I E N C E - News
In the early images Himeros appeared saddle-shaped, and we could not be sure if it was indeed an impact crater, but Psyche displayed from the start the classical bowl shape of an impact crater.
Another mystery is that the interior surface of Himeros is relatively smooth and much less heavily cratered than typical areas on Eros, and so it must be relatively young.
The interior of Shoemaker Regio is young like the interiors of Himeros and Psyche, because it is lightly cratered, but it is also the most boulder-rich area on Eros and very different from the relatively smooth interiors of Himeros and Psyche.

He Fights for Us! Escaping the Tempter's Snares
She was attended by Eros and Himeros when she was first born but when she stepped ashore on Cyprus she was a “modest and lovely Goddess,” since known as the Lady of Kypros.
Her gentle domain was intended to be “the sweetness of love” and “the whispering of girls” but her adventures, and the adventures of her children, caused as much misery and bloodshed as any of the immortals (except for Ares and Athene: they thrived on the sanguine).
Notice it says that she was attended by Himeros and Eros, the latter a god we have all heard of in the Roman form of Cupid.

She was an early earth goddess and it is written that Gaia was born from Khaos, the great void of emptiness within the universe, and with her came Eros (Himeros).
Himeros was the ancient god of desire and one of the Erotes, were the ever-youthful winged gods of love or daimones of love.
When the newly born Aphrodite emerged from the sea, Himeros was the first god to welcome her and became her constant companion.

 Cupid (Olympian god)
(Himeros and Anteros were alternate versions of this name).
It could certainly be a title of Eros, but I have found mention of Anteros as a seperate deity in Edith Hamilton's Mythology.
The myth of the floating baby with wings came from the idea that the spirits of the future born visited earth to match up their future parents which probably explains why there was so many of them as opposed to only one Eros.

Himeros, which is less cratered than the rest of Eros, may be the surface where Eros broke off a larger object that was struck by yet another space rock, Zuber said.
Or Himeros may just be the place where part of Eros was knocked off during a collision with a similar-size object.
Once thought to be a rubble pile held together only by gravity, Eros’ topography shows the asteroid was shaped both by gravity and by the material strength of its solid bedrock.

This makes sense as one examines Socrates speculatation that the name Himeros or imeros has its etymological roots in dia ten esin tes roes, meaning the stream that most draws the soul.
If we separate Eros from Himeros, the act from the desire, we find that they are different experiencs.
Himeros is a drawing out while Eros is a flowing in.

DEAD DRUNK DUBLIN and other imaginal spaces - manifestos - a mandala of existence
If himeros is the material and physical desire of eros, and anteros the relational mutuality and exchange, pothos is love's spiritual portion.
Pothos, as the wider factor in eros, drives the sailor-wanderer to quest for what cannot be fulfilled and what must be impossible.
It is the source of "impossible love", producing the Tristan complex that refuses himeros and anteros in order to maintain the transcendence of pothos.

NEAR Shoemaker thrills CU teams with landing
For the Cornell teams, it was the end of years of tense, hard work and a year of enormous successes in producing more than 160,000 images from the multispectral imager (MSI), or camera, and masses of data from the NEAR X-ray/gamma-ray spectrometer (XGRS) -- 10 times more data than originally planned.
The final image was taken just 394 feet from the asteroid's surface as the spacecraft drifted down at a speed of 4 miles per hour, coming to rest in a saddle-shaped depression called Himeros after a 2-billion-mile journey.
It was the first man-made instrument to land on an asteroid, and the maneuver went flawlessly despite the fact that NEAR Shoemaker was designed only to orbit Eros and not to land.

It has been shown that for craters smaller 1km the crater density on Eros is nearly saturated, but that craters smaller than 100m are strongly depleted relative to values for saturation observed on other bodies.
Psyche has a crater density similar to Himeros for craters larger than 100m but a lower crater density for smaller craters.
The crater density within Shoemaker Regio is less than the density in Himeros and Psyche at all sizes measured.

 Pothos
In Greek myth, Pothos and his brothers Eros ('love') and Himeros ('desire') were the sons of Zephyr, the westerly wind.
However, according to the Athenian philosopher Plato (427-348), Himeros and Pothos were the sons of Eros (Cratylus 420a).
Whatever their precise family connections, Himeros represented the desire towards something that was within human reach, and Pothos was the longing towards an unattainable goal.

However, on the inner wall of Himeros (lower right), steep slopes are extensive and the bright material appears as pervasive, scattered patches.

SPACE.com -- Asteroid Landing Looms: Probe Sends Back Target Pics
One of the most recognizable surface features on Eros is the boulder-filled, concave depression at the southwestern edge of the saddle-shaped Himeros feature.
When it was first glimpsed early in NEAR Shoemaker's orbital mission the area was informally tagged "Boulderado." It is shown here in a mosaic of pictures taken June 14, 2000, from an orbital altitude of 32 miles (52 kilometers).
Instead, "Boulderado" is covered with the densest concentrations of boulders on the asteroid, suggesting that the craters that must once have populated the area have either been buried or eroded by regolith movement.
