According to Charlemagne's biographer, Einhard, Pippin had been duped, through flattery, into joining a rebellion of nobles who pretended to despise Charles' treatment of Himiltrude, Pippin's mother, in 770.
Charles renamed his son Carloman as Pippin to keep the name alive in the dynasty.
His first wife was Himiltrude, married in 766.
