		It might be something to do with the fact that these boys are French (and should stick with what they know best, namely fermenting blue cheese), but the fact remains that In the Raven's Shadow is...sure to be a flop.
		For better or worse, Himinbjorg is not a pure force like Immortal or whoever; but on their latest release for Red Stream the band ditched much of the lame vocalizations and experimentations of the past and finds its own footing.
		While the CD kicks off with a song sporting an intro and a solo akin to Metallica, the truth is that the band is more extreme than that comparison allows, and can often launch an attack on the jugular.

		So it's a mystery why Himinbjorg plays this "Viking metal" subgenre (well, according to fl metal myth, the members are originally from Iceland, but we're not going to cloud this review's premise with facts).

		Himinbjorg play a scandinavean fl / viking metal dominated by a rhythmic yet dynamic fast tempo, that reminded me immediately of the most interesting norwegian viking – pagan fl metal hordes.
		If you’re not too much into this kind of powerless ‘ravenous’ fl metal screams (quite similar in both approach and register to label-mates of Nehemah for instance), some of the themes may sound a little bit old-dated to your ears.
		With «Europa», Himinbjorg have proved themselves capable of creating subtle fl metal hymns without loosing their own and personal trademark.

		Himinbjorg at their best is wonderful to listen to but sometimes it seems as if there is something missing in the song writing department.

		It is 2005 and French Himinbjorg is back with another pagan metal album called "Europa".
		Unfortunately I'm not really familiar with their previous releases (except for two albums put on cassette, though don't know the titles anymore and furthermore the tape got lost as well) so it'll be impossible to compare this "Europa" to their previous work.
		Himinbjorg actually doesn't sound like Primordial though still that same atmosphere can be found here and there.

		France's Himinbjorg really lets it blast on their newest full length album "Golden Age".
		This is easily their fastest and rawest album to date bringing to mind the music of their second album "In The Ravens Shadows" a lot, only much speedier.
		Himinbjorg has always been one of my favorite bands in this genre, and thankfully they have come back and exceeded any expectations I had for them.

		Himinbjorg has been labeled as a viking band and actually, this French band is the first non-Scandinavian viking metal band which I have come across recently.
		Unfortunately, I have not had the chance to listen to their earlier releases but Europa makes me realize that there are many good bands out there waiting to be discovered.
		Euorpa begins with a song named Entering Odin’s Huge Palace, which symbolically is Himinbjorg’s latest release and this viking band’s album is a good stay in this Palace.

		It's like Himinbjorg busted out the weed once again when it was time to flesh out their songs, allowing them to ease off the intensity to kick back and feel a certain groove or atmosphere when the song calls for something off the beaten path.

		After a few listens, I can say that Himinbjorg has not changed altogether since the last album, the excellent Golden Age, and also that Europa is not as good as I expected.
		This background settled, Himinbjorg share their approach of music with new era Enslaved, i.e.
		Oddly enough though, the best passages of Europa are the less progressive, more catchy and aggressive songs like the killer track Les Strates (a very simple song with a massive riff and a great work on the vocals) or the epic The Alienated.

		This album friggin' ruled and is probably my favorite album of theirs since "When Ravens Fly" and it was a return back more towards their roots, but they seemed to take the Viking and Pagan theme even farther with the release of "Golden Age".
		The nature photos are great though, and the new Himinbjorg logo is definitely the coolest one yet.
		I suggest fans of the band listen to this before they buy it and newcomers to the band would be better off buying one of their older albums, as long as it isn't "Third".

		Compared to past efforts, keyboards are conspicuous for their absence, as the band continues to tread a somewhat more aggressive path than before -- a process that had already begun with _Haunted Shores_.
		In addition to a number of musical approaches, with varying ties to fl metal, Himinbjorg use several vocal styles: basic fl metal rasps, a style that might be likened to Attila's vocals on Mayhem's _De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas_ but fails to have any positive effect on the music, occasional grunts and some mediocre clean singing.
		Himinbjorg have shown in the past that they can do better than this, so perhaps their next release will mark a return to form.

		At first listen, I was a bit skeptical on a few occasions as there are a ton of odd breaks and choruses.
		Himinbjorg have taken traits from both "Golden Age" and "Haunted Shores" with what would seem to be a bit experimental, but actually sounds like their most sophisticated release thus far.
		I would recommend this album to all Viking/fl metal hordes out there and aside from the oddly vocal grimacing and somewhat de-harmonized chants at times, Europa will surely grow on you.
