It was a small contingent, and Celegorm and Curufin between themselves had selected their finest and bravest.

This is important because the Annals answer some questions left open by the irruption of Easterlings into East Beleriand, "year" 463.
According to the QS, the Easterlings came and settled with Maedhros and Caranthir after Morgoth had overtaken Maglor's Gap, Helevorn, and Himlad.
As of 460 or so the Feanorians huddled in Amon Ereb while Morgoth roamed freely to the north.

Of course, Curufin said nothing of Beren's foolhardy quest, Finrod's willingness to sacrifice all his people for the sake of his oath to Barahir, their exile from Nargothrond, and their later meeting with Beren and Luthien.

The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum - Celebrimbor
But to come to either Crissaegrim or to Fingolfin might indeed involve braving the perils of Dungorthin.
I say might because one of the problems with the story of Maeglin is that it ignores entirely the possiblilty of travel between Gondolin and Himlad via Dorthonion, which one would think, in those days before the breaking of the Siege, would be much safer, though somewhat longer.
I do not believe that Tolkien, once he had placed the founding of Gondolin before the breaking of the Siege, ever in any way indicated what was thought when Turgon and all his people suddenly vanished, forsaking the siege of Angband.
