They may have been able to increase their numbers because of their relative stability, and were probably better prepared to withstand attacks from orcs: they were able to flee to the hills, so Maedhros' people could withstand the volcanic ash that issued from Angband, as well as have the higher ground during the actual battles.
The chief citadel of Maedhros was upon the Hill of Himring, the Ever-cold; and that was wide-shouldered, bare of trees, and flat upon its summit, surrounded by many lesser hills.
Himring itself could probably be defended quite well by stationing troops in a circle around its summit.

To the west and south it had a long shore with the Great Sea Belegaer, to the north were the highland regions of Hithlum, Dorthonion and the hills of Himring[?], to the east the Ered Luin (Blue Mountains) reached nearly to the sea.
The land of Nevrast[?] in the northwest was sometimes considered part of Beleriand.
Likewise part of Dorthonion became Tol Fuin, and the Hill of Himring[?] became the island of Himling.

The mountains ended in a jumble of low hills, surrounding a single bare hill with a broad, flat summit: the Hill of Himring.
After the Return of the Noldor, Maedhros the eldest son of Fëanor came to the hill, and built the greatest of his citadels on its flat summit.
It was apparently destroyed in the War of Wrath: at least, by the end of the Third Age, all that remained of the Hill of Himring was a solitary island, Himling, lying off the northwest coasts of Middle-earth.
