		Samar, formerly Western Samar, is a province of the Philippines located in the Eastern Visayas region.
		Bordering the province to the north is Northern Samar and to the east is Eastern Samar.
		Samar is connected to Leyte via the San Juanico Bridge, which spans the San Juanico Strait, the narrowest strait in the country.

		BORONGAN, Eastern Samar — Samareños have claimed victory in their dogged struggle to preserve the island’s remaining forest, but for some of Samar Island’s precious natural wealth the success of the save-the-environment campaign came years too late.
		Twelve years after the Philippine Pyrite Corp. ceased its mining operation in barangay Bagacay, Hinabangan, Samar, the Taft River in Eastern Samar remains a “dead river.” Until now no marine life survives in the river because of heavy pollution from the Bagacay mines upstream.
		Non-government organizations, local government officials, youth groups and private individuals had lobbied President Arroyo to set aside the 333,000 hectares as the SINP and protect the island’s remaining forests in the face of the relentless attacks by loggers, both legal and illegal.
