President Gordon B. Hinckley was ordained and set apart as the 15th president of the Church on March 12, 1995, after serving 14 years as a counselor in the First Presidency and 20 years in the Quorum of the Twelve.
His grandfather was Ira Hinckley, a convert of 1844 who crossed the plains, supervised construction of Cove Fort in central Utah and later served as president of the Millard Stake.
President Hinckley was sustained an Assistant to the Twelve April 6, 1958, and as a member of the Quorum of the Twelve Sept. 30, 1961.

On April 12, 1867, Brigham Young wrote a letter to Ira Hinckley asking him to take charge of building a Fort on Cove Creek, located in central Utah, a day's journey from the town of Fillmore, on the north of the town of Beaver.
This fort, built instead of a town because of the scarcity of water was to be a way station for travelers along the "Mormon Corridor"—settlements stretching from Idaho to Nevada connected by a network of roads, telegraph lines, and postal routes.
Shortly afterward, efforts to restore the fort to its original condition were begun, and on May 21, 1994, Gordon B. Hinckley, later president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, dedicated the Historic Cove Fort Complex.
