By 1894, the town of Hinckley was surrounded by vast stretches of combustible cutover land.
The Hinckley Fire was particularly devastating not just because of the loss of life and standing timber, but because it forced the big lumber companies that now dominated the valley to accelerate their logging activities.

Willard Munger: This 75-mile trail between Hinckley and Duluth is one of the oldest and longest paved trails in the nation.
The stretch from Hinckley to Barnum is known as the Fire Trail, as it passes through countryside scorched by the cataclysmic Hinckley Fire of 1894 and Cloquet and Moose Lake Fire of 1918, each of which killed more than 400 people.
The trail starts in Hinckley near the green-frame Fire Museum, which holds fascinating exhibits about the cyclonic 1894 fire, and continues to Willow River along a rail corridor that was the scene of a dramatic rescue.

 Great Hinckley Fire - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The fire occurred on September 1, 1894 and was centered at Hinckley, Minnesota.
The main contributor to the fire was apparently the then-common method of lumber harvesting, which involved stripping trees of their branches, littering the ground with such detritus.
Today, a 37-mile section of the Willard Munger State Trail, from Hinckley to Barnum, is a memorial to the fire and the devastation it caused.

One boy is reported burned to death from the township of Nordland.
There is not one foot of unburned land from Aitken to Mille Lacs Lake, a distance of twenty miles south, while the burned district north and south through the pine woods, is unknown, but settlers for fifty miles reported fire even beyond them and burning fiercely.
Tacoma, Washington, telegraphed this morning, asking if aid was needed, but was answered by the Mayor that Minnesota would be able to care for all and to rehabilitate the living.

Hinckley's largest employer, Grand Casino, is currently prospering but will face increased competition for gamblers if additional casinos are built around the state.
Civic leaders and groups such as the Lions Club are involved in the Hinckley Fire Brigade, an organization that hopes to summon the “Spirit of 1894” that enabled Hinckley residents to rebuild their town after the devastating fire.
While the group is in its infancy, it hopes that Hinckley will eventually follow the example of other towns that revitalized their historic districts with antique stores, restaurants, and bed and breakfasts.

In 1999 the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources created a trails task force to prepare recommendations for trails on state lands for OHM (motorcycle), OHV (off highway vehicles) and ORV (off road vehicles or trucks) in Mille Lacs and Kanabec Counties.
The Ford Township Board of Supervisors unanimously adopted a resolution opposing development of truck trails in Section 16 of Ford Township on October 12, 1999.
During the firearms deer hunting season in November, a petition opposing the development of ORV trails in Section 16 was signed by 67 deer hunters, most of whom were deer hunting in Section 16 and the rest in Sections 15 or 14 nearby.
