The reason is that development of Hindi in Delhi took an anti India turn.Instead of depending on the Mother Source-Sanskrit-and sister sources-the regional languages of India; Hindi began to absorb Urdu words to make itself acceptable to Moslem Minority.It resulted in other provinces getting alienated with Hindi.
Hindi has lots of words-both of Sanskrit and Prakrit-in common with lots of other Indian languages.One example is BHAAT-the cooked rice.Almost every Indian language uses this world-but in hindi it is replaced with CHAAVAL.This kind of shortsightedness has wrought havoc.All Indian languages have more in common with each other than perceived.
Hindi was imposed upon us, albeit for good reasons inorder to 'unify' this country on linguistic lines..but at the same time we also divided our states along regional linguistic lines, thus creating a contradiction!

I am not quite sure if Hindi was accorded the official language status because the majority of states use Hindi as principal official language.
For, the Hindi speakers simply refuse to learn the language of the land when they migrate, unlike, say, a Malyalam-speaking Keralite or a Nepali-speaking Gorkha, who would quickly learn the local accent of Hindi and blend almost inseparably with a Delhiite or a Lucknowi.

Hindi is way more accessible than Urdu (on the net and otherwise, I do believe).
