An Introduction to Hindi and Urdu : INTRODUCTION : The Development of Hindi and Urdu
Since both Hindi and Urdu writers were forced to come to grips with the same problems of rapid social change and cultural disorientation that struck India during the 19th century, the histories of the two literatures tend to converge during that period.
The fact that Hindi and Urdu have one of the world's leading traditions of written literature should not be allowed to overshadow the rich oral folk literature that continues to thrive in the Hindi dialects.

Hindi (and Urdu) is descended from Hindustani, the colloquial form of speech that was spoken in the area in and around Delhi in North India roughly in the ninth and tenth centuries.
Hindi is broadly identical with Urdu, the official language of Pakistan, and is closely related to Bengali, Punjabi and Gujerati.
In the course of another century it split into Hindi and Urdu, the former representing a Sanskrit bias and the latter a Persian one.

Dr Thomas de Bruijn is a specialist in early and modern Hindi and Urdu literature, was the Guest Editor for the special theme issue on South Asian Literature in IIAS Newsletter 21, and was, until 15 October 2001, an affiliated fellow with the IIAS, Leiden.
During his years in Prague, the scene of Hindi writing was dominated by the rise of a group of innovative writers and the intense debate with more conservative critics.
In his view, the use of Indian languages connects authors with an old tradition: 'Language is not merely a language in which you write, but it is something in which an entire traditional world of a person is reflected.

Persian, Urdu, English, or Arabic language in Pakistan?
Urdu is native to India than to Pakistan and is the language of the culturally and politically dominant North-West Indians who are in majority in Hindustan- and that it is actually Hindi but slightly Persianized.
Howsoever you may add Arabic and Persian words to Urdu, there is no denying the fact that the syntax, the form, the fundamentals of the language are derived from Hindi and not from Arabic.

He explores the history of Hindi -- from the first indications of linguistic polarization that arose during the Raj to the connotations of chauvinism that have come to be linked with Hindi in the post-independence era with the rise of the 'one nation' theory where Hindi was touted as the language of the unified Hindustan.
Therefore, even though a Hindi writer, in exercising his creativity, is free to neglect the domination of "Hindi", the audience that he writes for is still subject to the dominion of Manak Hindi which comes to them with all the weight of the educational apparatus.
The kind of Hindi elite which forms is in fact formed of people who are looking enviously at positions of power, seeking to appropriate those positions of power, and indeed politically succeeding in appropriating those positions of power; but they are still deprived of, and know that they are deprived of the cultural capital.

I daresay that not only did these Urdu poets transform the metaphor and idiom of Hindi songs, but their own oeuvre was also transformed by the exigencies of Hindi cinema.
While an inventory of such works would be too huge to list, consider those song writers in Hindi cinema who were members of the Progressive Writers Association, another institution that played a significant role in cementing the linkages between Urdu poetry and Hindi films.
And fittingly, it is Gulzar, the Ghalib aficionado that provides us with a lyrical proof of the intertwined nature of Urdu and Hindi in the literary realm of the film song.

In support of the South Asia Studies Program of the Foreign Languages Department, the Libraries has been purchasing vernacular materials to build a good reading and cultural collection in the two main languages of study, Hindi and Urdu.
