Hindmarsh joined the Royal Navy in 1793, seeing action at the Battle of the Nile in 1798 where he was briefly the only officer on the deck of the HMS Bellerophon where he gave orders which saved the ship from destruction.
Hindmarsh arrived in South Australia in 28 December 1836, with a fleet of ships carrying the first British settlers for the colony.
Hindmarsh was knighted by Queen Victoria on 7 August 1851, attained the rank of rear-admiral in 1856 and retired in 1856 to the seaside town of Hove, England.

The Hindmarsh Island bridge controversy was an Australian legal and political controversy that involved the clash of Indigenous Australian religious beliefs and the rights of property owners.
In 1988 a plan to build a bridge from Goolwa to Hindmarsh Island in the Murray River estuary, South Australia, was proposed by local marina owners, Tom and Wendy Chapman.
In June, the Hindmarsh Island Royal Commission was called by the South Australian government and by December found that the secret women's business was a fabrication.

The Chapmans had maintained since 1989 that the future of their company, Binalong, depended on a bridge being built to replace a ferry from the mainland to the island.
