I do not mean to say that Indian immigrants in America instantly forget and forego their caste identity, but commensality patterns and other social associations promptly ignore it, and it appears to be less important in the selection of mates for their offspring than other criteria such as financial and professional status and regional origin.
Hinduism in America deserves to be watched closely, and I will be curious to see the results of Diana Eck's ongoing and encompassing project.
South Asian diasporic intellectuals tend to be located in departments of English, of comparative literature, of women's studies, and the like, in which they teach subjects such as cultural studies, postcolonial literature, or Third-World women.

C8, although not wanting to force Hinduism on her children, has decided that she will provide them with the knowledge and exposure which will enable them to be familiar with their Indian origins, and make the decision as to whether or not Hinduism will become a significant part of their lives.
She identifies being a Hindu as something both different and the same, in that she has a different religion, but that we all pray, and that we are all people.
However, it is interesting that the sister who has chosen to make Hinduism a daily part of her life, C8, embraces Hinduism as a flexible and growing religion, whereas C8B, who might be categorized as a non-practicing Hindu fears the ultimate disappearance of Hinduism in America in the future.
