Hindustan Motors Ltd said on Friday it was in talks to supply gear-boxes and engines to the country's top utility vehicles maker, Mahindra, but needed to address such issues as demand before striking a deal.
Hindustan Motors, one of India's oldest automobile companies and maker of the vintage-looking Ambassador cars and Mitsubishi's Lancer sedan is trying to grow into a supplier of engines and other parts for vehicle firms in the country.
Chaturvedi said Hindustan Motors will begin production of engines for Ford Ikon sedan in December, some financial benefits of which will be seen in the company's fourth quarter beginning in January but fully in the next financial year.

The gearbox and transmission units would be manufactured at Hindustan Motor's Pithampur plant in the central Indian state of Madhya Pradesh.
Ford Motor Co announced last Friday it would cut 10 percent of its work force, or 35,000 jobs and close up to seven North American plants to slash production capacity as part of a plan to pull the automotive giant out of stunning tailspin.
Officials said the investments would be made over a period of four years, 70 percent of which was expected to be made by Hindustan Motors and the remaining by Ford.

19,2001, ET HINDUSTAN Motors on Thursday unveiled a compressed natural gas version of its Rural Transport Vehicle priced at Rs 4.36 lakhs (ex-showroom-Delhi) in a bid to cash in on the new emission norms to be enforced in Delhi from March 2001.
The vehicle, made in alliance with Australia-based OKA Motor Company, will be sold in both the passenger and a 1.5 tonne cargo version, Hindustan Motors president (automobile division) B K Chaturvedi said.
Hindustan Motors also manufactures the petrol and diesel version of the vehicle at its plant in Pithampur (near Indore) which has a monthly manufacturing capacity of 500 vehicles.
