Locomotives built for the Intercolonial Railway will have the mark "ICR" in the "Builder" column, while locomotives built for the CNR will have the mark "CNR", but will be marked in the locomotive listings as "Moncton".
The Grant Locomotive Works formed in 1867 from the New Jersey Locomotive Company, and was yet another locomotive builder from Paterson NJ (The others being Rogers and Cooke).
The North British Locomotive Company was formed in 1903 through the amalgamation of three Glasgow companies: Sharp Stewart at the Atlas Works, Springburn (previously in Manchester); Neilson Reid at the Hyde Park Works, Springburn; and Dübs and Co at the Queen's Park Works, Polmadie.

Hinkley Locomotive Works was one of a number of railroad steam locomotive manufacturers of the United States in the 19th century.
The company's first locomotive was a 4-2-0 built in 1840 that followed the roughly standard designs of the 1830s.
Hinkley, who had been forced out in the foreclosure, returned to the company in another reorganization in 1864 as the Hinkley and Williams Locomotive Works.

 Oddities - Curiosities of Locomotive Design
Locomotives driven through a supplementary driving axle were very common in the United States, but they were used mostly in the process of evolution.
The first locomotive of that type tried was considered to work so satisfactory that two others, much more powerful than the first one, were made, one of them being the subject of illustration which was copied from the Railway World, of London.
Worsdell is of the opinion that it is the oldest locomotive in the world that is daily under steam, for it was built in 1822 and is now regularly used as part of the motive power equipment in the collieries of Sir Lindsay Wood, who is one of the directors of the North Eastern Railway.

ALCO was known for its steam locomotives of which the 4-6-4 Hudson and the 4-8-4 Niagara built for the New York Central and the 4-6-6-4 (Challenger) built for the Union Pacific Railroad were fine examples.
Although it was strongly committed to the steam locomotive, ALCO produced the first commercially successful diesel-electric locomotive in 1924 in a consortium with General Electric (electrical equipment) and Ingersoll-Rand (diesel engine).
This locomotive was sold to the Central Railroad of New Jersey, and subsequent locomotives were built for a number of railroads including the Long Island Rail Road and the Chicago and Northwestern Railway.

 Balanced Locomotives.
One of the problems with the conventional type of steam locomotive is the presence of forces caused by the pistons, piston-rods, crossheads etc moving back and forth.
As these masses are accelerated and decelerated, the reaction forces cause the locomotive to also accelerate and decelerate by a much smaller amount; it is still enough to make the riding rough and uncomfortable.
This locomotive also had two cylinders on each side, but mounted beside each other, a solution that was probably made possible by the larger American loading gauge.

Apparently the lumber firm relied on the Grand Trunk's locomotives to switch cars in and out of the new industrial spur, but when Grand Trunk engines were unavailable, the firm employed oxen to move empty and loaded cars on the spur to the Grand Trunk.
From a total of nine locomotives on hand in 1926, the number had dropped to seven by 1929, six by 1936, to five in 1942.
Upon completion of this report, the locomotive should be restored as Berlin Mills Railway No. 7, repainted, lettered and numbered in a historically accurate fashion for that railroad, with whatever color lettering and decoration documentary research and physical research determines was in use during the 1920s or earlier on engines of the Berlin Mills Railway.

Cooke evolved from the Danforth Cooke and Co. and later the Danforth Locomotive and Machine Co. The basic Cooke plate was a 9 1/2" round brass plate with all of the usual data except the date of manufacture was omitted.
While Montreal was included in the ALCO group at a later date, they were not in business prior to 1900, so we will cover the Montreal Locomotive and Machine Company and the subsequent Montreal Locomotive Works when we look at the ALCO series in the next article.
We will have to forget Norris, Hinkley, Grant, and Taunton They were all major builders, but we do not have access to their plates.

Locomotives with non-circular wheels have always been just a bit of a minority taste.
The theory behind this quite daft arrangement was that the line contact at the intersection of each segment would have better rail adhesion than a circular wheel, which was supposed to have only a point contact.
This worked about as well as you would think it would, and the idea was soon dropped.

MP #152 - This 2-6-0 is the pride of her crew, Missouri Pacific Railroad #152 built by Hinkley Locomotive Works in 1872 poses for the camera at Hermann, Missouri in 1877.
The number "38" on the locomotive side as well as the "Missouri Pacific" on the tender may have been spliced into place, or chemically altered to increse contrast (before computers, newspapers and such were known to use such rustic enhancements to make their photos reproduce better for printing.
The locomotives had 28 x 30 cylinders, 63" drivers, a boiler pressure of 240 psi, a tractive effort of 66,500 lbs and weighed in at 412,200 lbs.
