Rural Heritage - Mule or Hinny?   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-19)
The hinny usually has a fuller tail and more horselike limbs and feet than the mule, and its body is more like that of a horse.
In temperament, the young hinny favors the donkey, tending to be gentler and less nervous than the young mule.
Neither the mule nor the hinny is simply half horse and half donkey, but is an individual animal with completely blended characteristics, plus a few new ones belonging only to itself and not found in either parent.

One hundred fifty -nine attempts at establishing a hinny pregnancy were made in fifty-one jennets of normal fertility using six different horse and pony stallions of proven fertility.
I had one mule man tell me that he felt hinnies were superior performance prospects because they would "give you more of what they have." I haven't heard or read of any hinnies dominating the racing circuit or winning the mule marathon, but I have no way of proving or disproving the man's statement.
I have seen other hinnies who were "wild"; including an Arabian Hinny that one mule writer owned and dubbed the Hinny from Hell, in some of her articles.

 Mules
For all purposes, hinnies and mules are classified and shown together under the general term Mule.
A mule or hinny may be a male (horse mule or horse hinny) or a female (mare mule or mare hinny).
Hinnies may tend to be slightly smaller, simply because of the fact that most donkeys are smaller than horses.

Even though the mule and hinny hybrids have the same sexual characteristics and drive as their parents, they are sterile due to an uneven number of chromosomes - 63.
A hinny is smaller and more horse like than a mule, with shorter ears, a larger head and broader hooves; but has the ass's calmer disposition.
Hinnys come in about the same sizes but as E.C.Porter states in A Breeders Notebook, "It is simply the very low conception rate of the jennet (even to a Jack), which makes the breeding of hinnies much less sure and not at all profitable, compared to the breeding of mules."

Rural Heritage - Horse + Donkey = Mule
The head of a mule or hinny is larger than the head of a horse of comparable size.
This odd number is responsible for mule's sterility—the donkey and horse chromosomes are unable to form matched pairs during the early stages of conception, resulting in the death of the reproductive cells.
Thanks to hybrid vigor, mules and hinnies may live 30 to 40 years (and sometimes up to 50), with a comparably longer working life than that of a horse.

The genetic inheritance of the hinny is exactly the same as the mule.
Scientists think that differences in hinnies and mules may be from the result of maternal influences on the fetus, and in the upbringing of the foal.
Hinnies do not differ from mules in endurance, or other useful traits, but are bred more rarely because the donkey dam tends to make the offspring smaller.

A council has instructed its staff to think carefully before using colloquial words such as "pet" and "hinny" to refer to women, in case they cause offence.
He said a term such as "hinny" had been used for about 200 years and its connotations were those of familiarity and not of sexism.
"There's a debate on what "hinny" means, it either means honey or it has a Scottish connection, and originally it could be used towards a man or a woman," Mr Griffiths said.
