Five train passengers and the drivers of both the train and the car are killed; over 100 passengers are injured.
The records of the train's show that the train passed a bend where the speed is limited to 40 km/h at 80 km/h.
One of the dead was a 14 year old boy and the other one was an old man. The train then skidded in to the taxi rank at a near by station and injured a taxi driver as his car was crushed under the train.

As the train moved under a highway crossing, the helicopter made a right-hand 360-degree turn, manoeuvred directly over the train, and descended to a skid height of about 12 feet above the rail cars.

Accident to the F. The report reached the city this morning that train No. 4, (the vestibuled) had been derailed a short distance east of Hinton, and the investigation by the ADVERTISER shows that there was an accident to this train, but not so bad as at first rumored.
At about 5 o'clock this morning the train ran into a rock, which had rolled on the track from the mountain above, two miles east of Hinton.
The train was running at good speed, and the collision caused the engine and express and postal cars to be derailed.

The first passenger train crossed the structure on December 17, 1859 and it was formally opened by the Prince of Wales, later to become King Edward VII, on August 25, 1860.
The train ran via CP on the outward trip and in western Canada and on CN on the return leg in Ontario.

It was a long and heavy train powered by six diesel locomotives: CN 1786 in front, followed by 1760, 1758, 1765, 1764, and 1754.
As it went along, this last train was tearing up the track behind it, and salvaging rail from the dismantled track by hauling it aboard in continuous lengths of 1482 feet.
Even with six engines, the train was seriously underpowered, as was shown when it stalled on a steep uphill grade Monday morning [16 September] at Maitland, and on another uphill grade with two sharp curves Tuesday afternoon at Blockhouse.

In 1999, there were 109 fatalities involving trains in Canada.
That's because freight trains don't typically run on schedules.
