Hinzelmann - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hinzelmann (sometimes called Luring) was a kobold, especially notable for a specific historical account, hailing from northern Germany.
Hinzelmann was said often to take the form of a child in red velvet, if he had to take any form whatsoever, but his true form (as he showed to a maid once, who instantly passed out) was that of a small child, around four years of age, stabbed and slashed with two swords.
Hinzelmann was best known for haunting the castle Hudemühlen, after being discovered in 1584.

But Hinzelmann's very heart was delighted at it, and he used afterwards to tell how it was he that began it, on purpose to set them fighting.
Hinzelmann was fond of society, but the society he chiefly delighted in was that of females, and he was to them very friendly and affable.
Hinzelmann is said to have made some verses on the unfortunate lover, and to have often sung them for his amusement, and repeated them to travellers, laughing heartily at them.

Kobold - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The most common version, Heinzelmännchen, is similar to Robin Goodfellow and brownies: as household elves of ambivalent nature, they sometimes perform domestic chores, but play malicious tricks if not appeased (Hinzelmann is a particular example).
Kobold is often used in German to translate the word 'Leprechaun', a type of Irish fairy goblin.
Neil Gaiman's novel American Gods returns to the traditional legend, depicting Hinzelmann as a benevolent, yet "closet-vengeful-homicidal" spirit that guards an apparently perfect small Wisconsin town at a price.

Hinzelmann is a German household spirit reputedly capable of both benevolent and malicious acts.
This is the sort of novel in which a Middle Eastern ifrit assumes the identity of an immigrant Manhattan cabdriver; the queen of Sheba amuses herself as a casually murderous hooker; and Shadow’s former cellmate “Low Key” Lyesmith bears a disturbing resemblance to the troublemaking Scandinavian demigod Loki.

Chapter IX: The Little White Feather.
"Hinzelmann," said the Kobold solemnly, "was a Spirit who haunted the castle of Hudemühlen, though it was not until late in the sixteenth century that those who lived there were aware of his presence.
Then Hinzelmann spoke to him with much reason, pointing out that he wished him no harm, and that it was impossible to shake him off, since wherever the lord went, he could follow.
When the time came for Hinzelmann to leave the castle, he presented its lord with three fairy gifts, the last of these being a leather glove richly wrought with pearls in a curious pattern of snails and scrolls.

Hinzelmann would become very angry, when somebody accused him of being a demon or some devilish creature, he pointed out that he was a Christian boy.
Hinzelmann left Hudemuehlen after four years had passed and left three things there: a straw hat, a small, hollow cross and a leather glova embroidered with pearls.
Additionally, the tales that Hinzelmann tells, i.e., the buck jumping out of his skin, Hinzelmann's grandfather freezing his family during the winter, the music from a trumpet freezing then thawing, etc., are generally drawn from the Adventures of Baron Munchausen, a popular book series first printed in 1785.

actually i read on a site somewhere (sorry cant remember where exctly) that hinzelmann was a kobold, originally from the fl forest in germany.
Notice how the really long one also mentions that Hinzelmann's real form (when asked) is the four-year-old child with the knives through his chest.
It had me wondering though: were all the Kobold stories rolled into one when NG created the character Hinzelmann, or are these stories all told about the same mythological creature, once a god, then a spirit, now a kobold (i.e.

The hedgehog armor did considerable damage to their line, until Hinzelmann himself rattled the nerve of the prickly creatures as he slithered by on a huge snake and laid about him with a great, walloping stick.

Nancy, a figure from Caribbean mythology; Sweeney, a rebellious leprechaun; Laura, Shadow’s dead wife who has accidentally been brought back to life; and Hinzelmann, who lives in the idyllic town of Lakeside, where he holds the key to a sinister secret.
As well as offering his readers a fascinating trawl through lesser known pantheons, Gaiman, who is best known for his Sandman graphic-novel series, pokes fun at the shallow materiality of contemporary institutions.

Gaiman also continues to be interested in people trapped between the twin agonies of life and death — Shadow's wife Laura both elicits our sympathy and our horror as she alternately tries to win his forgiveness for the indiscretions that led to her death and (quite violently) protects him from harm.
And as always in Gaiman's work, the line between good and bad blurs often, as characters like the kindly old Hinzelmann turn out to have unexpected hidden qualities.
Gaiman is skilled at bringing together clues that you won't even notice and surprising you with truly unexpected revelations, some of which make up the book's best moments.
