According to myth, king Oinomaus, ruler of Pisa in Greece, attempted to maintain his power by preventing his daughter, Hippodameia, from marrying.
He married Hippodameia and instituted chariot racing at the Olympic games.
Hippodameia originally celebrated the Heraia with a group of sixteen women.
