Giambologna’s Mercury, Moulin’s figure was inspired by the famous antique Dancing Faun from Pompeii (original in Museo Archeologico Nazionale, Naples).

  Hippolyte Moulin - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Hippolyte Alexandre Julien Moulin, sometimes given as Julien-Hippolyte Moulin or Hypolite Moulin, (1832- 1884) was a 19th Century French sculptor.
Moulin, a shopkeeper's son, entered the École des Beaux-Arts in 1855 but was unable to afford to continue the lessons and had to become a language teacher in Paris to support himself.
Moulin won further Salon medals in 1867 and 1869, and another at the Exposition Universelle of 1878.

He was the son of Jean-Baptiste-Jacques Flandrin [1773—1838], an amateur painter who specialized in portraits, and the brother of Auguste Flandrin [06 May 1801 – 30 Aug 1842] and Hippolyte Flandrin [23 Mar 1809 – 21 Mar 1864].
Like Hippolyte, he was taught lithography by Auguste.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (1826—1828) and in 1829 moved to Paris, where he enrolled in the studio of Ingres.

After marriage, his work changed when he became very much family oriented and was equally as interested in painting individual or family portraits as he was in landscapes.
In the 1870s, Renoir also produced some of his most celebrated Impressionist genre scenes, including The Swing (image at left) and The Ball at the Moulin de la Galette (both 1876).
Bal au moulin de la Galette, Montmartre sold for $78.1 million in 1990.

The dry palate has good intense fruit and excellent acidity, what sets it apart from the stylisticly similar Deiss Saint Hippolyte, is a strong mineral streak.
This wine whilst still very, very good, doesn’t shine quite like it did a year ago.

In taking up the theme of the cabaret and depicting scenes of Moulin de la Galette, a favourite Montmartre haunt of many Impressionist artists, Van Dongen drew his inspiration from the French turn of the century painters such as Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec.
The present work demonstrates Van Dongen's fascination with high society, depicting the cabaret crowded with elegant, fashionably dressed ladies and cigar smoking men.
He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon (1826—1828) and in 1829 moved to Paris, where he enrolled in the studio of Ingres[1780-1867].
