This is described in Padre Francisco Javier de Uría and Padre Olbes' 1812 report: "December 21, 1812, at about 10 o'clock in the morning two earthquakes occurred at an interval of a quarter of an hour.
The first made a considerable aperture in one corner of the church; the second shock threw down the said corner, and a quarter of the new houses contiguous to the church collapsed to the foundation.
Bouchard arranged a prisoner exchange but Chapman was left behind.

In 1769, Captain Gaspar de Portola rode through the area and gave it the name Santa Cruz (which is Spanish for Holy Cross).
The full Spanish name of the mission is "Misión la exaltación de la Santa Cruz," named after a feast day in the Church calendar which occurs on September 14: The Exaltation of the Holy Cross, celebrating the Christian symbol of the cross on which Jesus was crucified.
The next governor, José Joaquín de Arrillaga, was of similar disposition, and the Franciscans did not have further conflict with the military until the arrival of Diego Borica in October, 1794.

A frigate named "Santa Rosa" was one of two ships under the famous Argentine privateer Captain Hippolyte Bouchard who raided California (1816).
Argentina had just declared her independence from Spain and sought to encourage other revolts elsewhere, these two ships were commissioned to fight Spanish ships and to try to create a revolt in California.
On the summit of this peak are the remains of the log cabin of "Desert Steve" Ragsdale who built himself a ladder and platform to the top of a large tree and "adopted" the surrounding National Forest as his protection area in the 1939's.
