Hiptop comes to the UK - ZDNet UK Reviews
The Hiptop, a hybrid mobile phone and handheld device that's sold in the US by T-Mobile as the Sidekick, looks set to finally make it to the UK.
Danger, the company behind the Hiptop, has been in talks with a number of mobile operators about offering the device, and although the company is not yet prepared to name names, it's confident of being able to do so soon.
Also provided on the Hiptop out of the box are some PIM tools (an address book, calendar and to-do list manager), a basic note-taker, and a couple of games.

Every time I've had my hands on a Hiptop wireless device from Danger Inc., I've been unable to shake the feeling that the future was supposed to be full of things like this.
The Hiptop -- most widely sold as the T-Mobile Sidekick -- is an all-purpose, handheld communications machine with a color screen and loads of functions -- phone, e-mail, Web browsing, instant messaging, calendar, games and camera.
The HipTop debuted in 2002 and was revamped slightly last year with a color screen.

 MIDP on Danger's hiptop Device
The hiptop is available from a number of wireless operators around the world, notably T-Mobile USA and its larger cousin T-Mobile Germany, where the hiptop is marketed as the T-Mobile Sidekick.
As I noted earlier, the hiptop is in some respects a thin-client device, deferring some tasks like web-page rendering, network proxy, and data storage to a server hosted by the mobile operator.
While the life-cycle of a MIDlet on the hiptop conforms to the MIDP specification, it may be different from what some developers would expect.

Danger Hiptop (T-Mobile Sidekick Color) Review, Specifications, Images / Photos - Phoneyworld.com
Dear Reader, Since the Danger Hiptop (Color) is mostly similar to the original Hiptop (BandW) it is my appeal to you that it would be better if you were to read the other review (more detailed - same functions / form as this one) and then go on to this one.
The Danger Hiptop (color) like its predecessor is made for the GSM network and supports only the GSM 1900 frequency.
The Integrated PDA is based on the Hiptop Operating System, which supports multi tasking has 32 Mb of RAM, 4 Mb of Flash memory and an ARM7 processor.

For those who cannot live without their Graffiti or pen-driven interfaces, you may want to steer clear of the Hiptop, which uses the QWERTY keyboard, the glowing push wheel, directional pad, and a few buttons ("menu," "back," and "jump").
The Hiptop certainly won't hurt the adoption of wireless services in the U.S, especially with wireless acceptance in the States running way behind that of Asia and Europe.
The Hiptop unit itself is certainly attractive, although it will probably fare better in the consumer market than in the enterprise arena.

It's good that it doesn't, of course; indeed, there is no external antenna at all, and unlike every other phone on the market, the hiptop is horizontally-oriented, designed to be held in both hands for data and control purposes.
As a result, the hiptop is both easier to type on and easier to read from, be it Web or email content.
Soft sound effects accompany most actions, giving the hiptop a futuristic and friendly feel, without the tinny beeps of older devices.

When you consider name of the company that makes it, one would expect the Danger Hiptop to be somewhat different than a typical smartphone, and that is certainly the case.
The Hiptop is better known as the T-Mobile Sidekick, and is available from that carrier for about $300, though various rebates may lower the cost.
As versatile and clever as the Hiptop is as a PDA and digital communication device, it's somewhat inconvenient to use as a conventional phone.
