  Hiraizumi travel guide - Wikitravel
Hiraizumi (平泉, [1]) is a small town in Iwate, in the northeastern Tohoku region of Japan.
During the reign of the Fujiwaras (866-1184), Hiraizumi was said to rival Kyoto in grandeur and sophistication, but now all that remains are the temples of Chusonji and Motsuji, both of which are mostly in ruins at that.
Hiraizumi is on the JR Tohoku Main Line, connecting to Morioka in the north and Sendai to the south.

Hiraizumi is a considerable distance from Tokyo, and is the center of a prefecture that has historically been considered the edge of civilized Japan and the beginning of the realm of the northern peoples (the Ainu).
Hiraizumi had a two-room town museum with a reconstructed interior of a local house and copies of local folk stories on display.
This aspect of Hiraizumi illustrated that while specific tourist destinations represent "Japanese" as being a high culture, regional and rural identities, which might be represented in a way more comprable to Ainu representations of their identity, are also presented for other Japanese to see.

The three generations of the Fujiwara family at Hiraizumi were Fujiwara Kiyohira (1056-1128), Motohira, and Hidehira.
That since Basho had already mentioned Hidehira, he did not want to repeat that name, and since in the next line he refers to the destruction of Yoshitsune and because Yasuhira was directly involved with that, he uses Yasuhira's name here in a general sense.
All of the many places Basho visits at Hiraizumi fall into two groups; the first is Takadachi, and the second is the Hikarido.

 [minstrels] Untitled -- Matsuo Basho
Hiraizumi was the setting in which, centuries earlier, one of the great heroic tragedies of Japanese history had its bitter end.
Basho is believed to have chosen the Japanese word 'natsukusa', in reference to the muggy, slimy, rank muck that summer's oppressive humidity and heat turn the grasses of spring into, an appropriate vision, perhaps, of the chaos and treachery of war.
By the time Basho visited Hiraizumi centuries later, those dank overgrown weeds were all that remained of the fortress in which Yoshitsune made his final stand.

When Kerry Liu and Gina Hiraizumi met us on a brisk and chilly Thursday afternoon in Manoa to talk about their roles in the independent film "Soap Girl," which opens today, it looked like they could still be in character.
Hiraizumi, who plays Asia, the "bad girl with attitude," was decked out to turn heads from any angle -- perhaps as Asia would on her day off as the head girl and "resident trainer" in a Los Angeles massage parlor.
Liu, who stars in the title role as a mysterious woman who takes a job in the parlor for enigmatic reasons, was low-key, opting for the layered look and a cap that seemed to distance herself from her screen character.
