Cronk is not able to plow a ten-acre lot before breakfast, nor does he saw and split all the wood for the family use, but he is remarkably hale for his years, walks with the aid of a cane and evinces an interest in current affairs.
Cronk received from the state of New York a special pension of $72 per month, in addition to the pension granted by the federal government to all survivors of the war of 1812.

To Hiram Cronk of the quiet hamlet of Dunn Brook, eighteen miles from Rome, Oneida county, belongs the distinction of being the last surviving pensioner and the last American veteran of the War of 1812.
When Hiram Cronk was still a child the family moved from Herkimer to Oneida county, and after residing for a time in Wright settlement, the family moved to the town of Western, where Hiram has ever since lived.
Cronk relates this incident: ``In looking about, the Governor stepped upon a board, that gave away, and his excellency was precipitated into the ditch, which contained quite a little mud and water.

I have a Hiram Cronk who, along with his brothers John, Jasper, Eber, and their father James enlisted in the war together.
Hiram was born 1800 in the town of Western, Oneida County, and the ages are appropriate for them possibly being brothers.
Hiram was the last surviving veteran of War of 1812, so perhaps you could look for your John there.

According to data from the United States Department of Veterans Affairs, the last surviving U.S. veteran of the conflict, Hiram Cronk, died on May 13, 1905 at the age of 105.
The bold (or possibly rash) Americans had decisively defeated Britain once with help and hoped to do so again even without help.
