Hiram Percy Maxim (September 2, 1869 - February 17, 1936) was founder of the (Click link for more info and facts about American Radio Relay League) American Radio Relay League and had the amateur call sign W1AW (now the ARRL home station call sign).
Hiram Percy Maxim was a mechanical engineering graduate of the (An engineering university in Cambridge) Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He is noted as the inventor of the "Maxim Silencer" or (An electrical device for suppressing unwanted currents) Suppressor for firearms as well as of a silencer (or (A scarf worn around the neck) muffler) for gasoline engines.

Maxim founded an armaments company to produce his machine gun in Crayford, Kent, which was later bought out by the Vickers corporation in 1896, becoming 'Vickers, Son and Maxim'.

Like in 1894 when Marconi believed that he could pass over the sea using shortwaves, and succeeded, 30 years later amateurs demonstrated that ionospheric refraction (waves enter into the ionospheric layers and are then reflected to the ground) could enable worldwide communication by shortwaves.
Take for example the very short 30m band which is subject to many conflicts from some national administrations who seem not to understand that IARU was established to protect their interests and the ones of the amateur community, not to manage conflicts between administrations.
