Hiratsuka, with a population of 254,013 and 89,415 households (as of May 1, 1995) is located almost in the center of Kanagawa Prefecture, some 60km (38 miles) southwest of Tokyo, and 60km east of Mt. Fuji.
Hiratsuka literally means a flat elevation of earth.
By incorporating seven surrounding villages and a town into Hiratsuka in 1932, Hiratsuka became the fourth registered city in Kanagawa Prefecture with a population of 36,000.

The graphic work of Yuji Hiratsuka is a witty and original synthesis of old Japanese ukiyo-e tradition and modern Western elements and has not only conquered numerous awards in national and international competitions, but also the hearts of an international community of collectors.

Hiratsuka, one of the preeminent figures in the sosaku hanga movement, was born in Matsue, Honshû.
Hiratsuka's daughter, Keiko Hiratsuka Moore, has said that her father considered the dating and numbering of his prints to be a nuisance, a practice expected by western collectors, but not one that was compatible with his own views.
Hiratsuka's grandfather was an architect who designed houses and temples, and his father was a shrine carpenter, so the artist was introduced to wood-working and architecture early in his life.

Hiratsuka exhibited his first prints in 1916 at an exhibition of the independent Nika-kai ("Second Division Society"), and by the 1920s his reputation in the world of printmaking was considerable.
Hiratsuka was awarded the Order of Cultural Merit by the Japanese government in 1970, and in 1991, the Hiratsuka Un'ichi Print Museum was opened in Suzaka, Nagano Prefecture.
In Hiratsuka's portrayal of the Shôsôin, the stark contrast of the bright white paper and dense fl, achieved through multiple printings, is complemented by a bold, receding perspective seen from a low vantage point.

Hiratsuka Stadium is a fairly typical multipurpose facility built in the 1980s, though it reseived a rather nice facelift in 1998, which provided it with some nice concession stands, an impressive entrance and very well-appointed bathroom facilities (according to female visitors).
Apart from a small press box and roof for the prestige seats, the stadium is entirely open, with stands at both ends of the pitch and along the sidelines, and open corners.
Hiratsuka Stadium is located about 1.5 kilometers due north of Hiratsuka station, on the JR Tokaido line, and can be reached in an easy 15 or 20 minute walk through the city center.
