SquareSound / Square Enix Music Online :: Hiroki Kikuta :: Composer Information
Considering Kikuta's lack of vocal ability ultimately meant that he couldn't be the professional singer he aspired to be, the availability of new digital technology provided Kikuta with new opportunities, and, after obtaining his YAMAHA SY-77 synthesizer/sequencer, composing became one of his biggest passions.
Entirely self-taught, Kikuta cites listening to a great quantity of music from a wide range of styles as the principle force for the development of his musical sensitivity, though later referenced books to aid the development of the technical and harmonic sophistication of his works.
Kikuta's initial works were as a cartoonist, where he adopted the pseudonym; he was responsible for the manga Raven and contributed an article in the anthology The Ghost in Machine Head 2.

What isolates Kikuta from the rest of the Square Sound Team is that not only does his music hold a more eastern cultural sound/feel, but he was the first to make a full soundtrack with real live instruments instead of the usual synthetizers, so he prooves with his last project with Square : Soukaigi.
Kikuta finally gets out his electric guitar and plays us a solo that would make Yoshihiro Sato of Cyberorg fame jealous, but it's not all hard rock, as a piano interlude settles in, but the electric guitar makes a quick return, pleasing all his fans, this clearly fits the mood for a major battle IMHO.
Kikuta is hardly a newcomer to this business, and the orchestral feel given by the violins is rather enjoyable.

Koudelka, developed by Sacnoth, which was founded by ex-Square employee and composer Hiroki Kikuta, saw its American release in 2000, and very much shows its lackluster disposition as the company's first game.
Throughout the monastery, Koudelka and her male companions randomly encounter and battle a number of unusual monsters on a grid-based field, with each character's starting position set by players in the game menus.
Considering that Hiroki Kikuta, who composed Secret of Mana's soundtrack, provided the music, it should've turned out a lot better.

Either way, Kikuta is still Kikuta and his is a voice that has been sorely missed during his absence.
But those obstacles can be surpassed, especially by someone as gifted as Kikuta; what truly qualifies as a critical factor to this new venue is the game's subject, or perhaps lack thereof ― it's just not easy to write for something that doesn't inspire you.

In the case of this album I find the composition in the first half is not as colorful as it what is heard in SD2 (which is his most dated pro work, and the synth he uses on this new cd is actually better than what SD2 was limited to).
Kikuta is brilliant, I'd never suggest otherwise, but I feel the material here doesn't represent what he's truly capable of.
It's a pretty logical assumption with the Tenreijima ones, that he most likely made these as practice BEFORE soukaigi, or around the same timeframe, that maybe got cut and weren't selected to be in the game, which would explain why they weren't re-done live afterwards like the rest of Soukaigi...
