  press release
Trained at Tokyo University, Hara is one of the most accomplished in a new generation of avant-garde New Wave architects who became active beginning in the late 1960s and who were sharply critical of the contemporary urban developments in Japan.
Hara’s early works, the so-called “reflection houses,” such as his own residence at Machida near Tokyo and the Niramu House, Tokyo, display a negative attitude toward the chaotic and volatile conditions of the Japanese city and focus instead upon the internal order of the house as informed by critical aspects of dwelling.
Hara will spend several periods in residence at K-State during the 2004-2005 academic year, teaching in the fifth-year architecture studio of Professor Robert Arens.

One day in December of ‘41, Hiroshi brought the news to our father that one of the Hara’s most powerful sons, and Hiroshi’s chief rival, Toshio, had been spotted sneaking onto a freighter bound for Canada.
She informed us that Hiroshi was safe, but was being held, like many other Japanese people, at a camp somewhere in British Columbia.
Hiroshi himself was taken into custody but later released and pardoned for his role in Hara’s capture.

Elsewhere: Architecture of Skyscrapers by Francisco Asensio Cerver   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
Completed in 1993 and designed by Hiroshi Hara Atelier, this 40-story building instantly conjures images of the famous Grande Arch by at La Defense in Paris, the 330-foot-high almost hollow cube designed by Otto von Spreckelsen.
Hara's project is much bulkier and more complex and its opening is much more vertical.
Hara originally planned not just two towers as were built here but "a whole series of them stretching into infinity and forming a new city." Such a vision extends the daring of von Spreckelsen greatly and harks back to the early days of megastructural thinking and the Japanese Metabolists who dreamt immense urban vistas.

Harvard Gazette: Kyoto first city in series on art and architecture
Since Kyoto does not have its own airport, most visitors arrive by rail, disembarking in the city's new railway station, designed by Japanese architect Hiroshi Hara and completed in 1999 at a cost of more than $1 billion.
Postmodernist megastatements like Hara's station are not what most people associate with Kyoto, which served as Japan's capital from 794 to 1868 and is still considered the capital of traditional Japanese arts and spirituality.
And yet the station is there, unsettling and unavoidable, which may be why John Rosenfield decided to begin his lecture on Kyoto in that spot rather than in one of the many temples, museums, or manicured gardens with which the city abounds.

He was one of the oldest in a new generation of avant-garde New Wave architects, who were active from the late 1960s and early 1970s and who were sharply critical of the contemporary urban developments in Japan ( see JAPAN, §III, 5).
Yet, unlike many of his more radical contemporaries, such as Tadao Ando and Toyo Ito, Hara derived his design theories from his extensive studies of vernacular architecture and indigenous settlements in Asia and Africa, in an attempt to bridge the avant-garde and the ethnic.
Thereafter he followed a unique anthropological approach to architecture somewhat similar in nature to the one put forward by the members of Team Ten in Europe.
