 Flying Magazine Review, 1973
Hirth and Bede hope that by the end of this year, the dual-ignition engines will be certificated for normal aircraft use in both the U.S. and Germany.
Hirth has already undertaken long-term studies to reduce the fuel-consumption penalties of high-performance two-stroke engines, and it is looking into fuel injection or a reed-valve system instead of conventional carburetion.
Hirth is certainly optimistic enough to continue its own research into projects for a future line of light aircraft engines -- two-stroke, of course -- with four cylinders yielding outputs of around 100 to 120 hp -- for that it hopes will be ever more appealing two-seat lightplanes.

Goebler-Hirth Motoren KG (Hirth) of Benningen, Germany has entered into a licence to use Orbital's air-assist DI on a new range of 2-stroke engines to meet the growing global demand for heavy fuel engines.
Hirth has been in business since 1917 producing highly regarded 2-stroke aircraft engines for ultra-lights, helicopters, hovercrafts, fire pumps, amphibious aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs).
Hirth plans to offer a family of heavy fuel engines that can operate on kerosene based fuels to support a worldwide push to eliminate the use of gasoline in speciality engines in civilian and defence fields.

Hellmuth Hirth, born 1886 in Heilbronn, was a very successful German pilot before the First World War.
The partnership between "Ernst Heinkel AG" and "Hirth Motoren GmbH" parted and "Hirth Motoren GmbH" went on to develop and manufacture small and rugged two stroke engines for airplanes and stationary applications in Benningen under the name of "Hirth Motorenwerke KG".
Although many engines for snowmobiles were being manufactured, in 1974 the company ran into difficulties due to the strong dependence on the American market and the unfavourable currency exchange caused by the oil crisis.

 Jet engine
Heinkel had recently purchased the Hirth engine company, and Ohain and his master machinist Max Hahn were set up there as a new division of the Hirth company.
This leads to a very large cross section for the engine, as well as having the air flowing the wrong way after compression - it has to be collected up and "bent" to flow to the rear of the engine where the turbine is located.
Air coming in the front of the engine is blown to the rear of the engine by a fan, where it is crushed against a set of non-rotating blades called stators.

Heinkel HeS 011 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Schelp had earlier convinced Heinkel to put some effort into another pet project of his, a twin-compressor single-turbine turboprop, but had given up on this and instead offered Heinkel his new design as a consolation prize.
Like Junkers, Heinkel had recently purchased Hirth Motoren to avoid complaints from the RLM, so the von Ohain and Junkers teams were moved to Hirth to start work on the new design.
In some ways the HeS 011 can be considered a combination of the two team's designs, a three-stage axial compressor from Müller's team, combined with a single-stage centrifugal compressor from von Ohain's, driven a two-stage turbine.

The strength of this type of compressor is an advantage over the later axial-flow compressors that are still liable to foreign object damage (FOD in aviation parlance).
Austrian Anselm Franz of Junkers' engine division (Junkers Motoren or Jumo) addressed this problem with the introduction of the axial-flow compressor.
Air coming in the front of the engine is blown to the rear of the engine by a fan stage (convergent ducts), where it is crushed against a set of non-rotating blades called stators (divergent ducts).

A further disadvantage was that the air flow had to be "bent" to flow rearwards through the combustion section and to the turbine and tailpipe.
Austrian Anselm Franz of Junkers' engine division (Junkers Motoren or Jumo) addressed these problems with the introduction of the axial-flow compressor.
Air coming in the front of the engine is blown towards the rear of the engine by a fan stage (convergent ducts), where it is crushed against a set of non-rotating blades called stators (divergent ducts).
